Central Library 20 years ago

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The map diagram visualized it how the floor plan of a public library was looked like 20 years ago and how it looks currently.

Overall the rounded tables and chairs that was on hallway moved to right side of the hallway entrance, and enquiry desk changed to Cafe including room that didn't existed before.

In first view I see some objects that had on center of hallway been moved to left side and turned to information desk with adult fiction books that were replaced with all refrence books from left side of the library hallway to the front and installed self-service machines as new. The room that used to place CDs, videos, computer games has been turned into some rooms with sofa's and children fiction books, and from now of they will do storytelling events in here.

The room on bottom right side has turned into Cafe which in previously it was enquiry desk with no room included so this is a big change for the library.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify several important changes, including the removal of the central tables and chairs, the conversion of the former enquiry-desk area into a café, and the addition of a computer room and self-service machines. These details show a relevant understanding of the plans. However, the overview is unclear and partly inaccurate: the tables and chairs were removed, not moved to the right side, and the enquiry desk was replaced by an information desk elsewhere, rather than simply changing into the café. Several major changes are also omitted, such as the lecture room, the relocation of children’s books, and the change from adult non-fiction to reference books. Select the main changes more accurately and summarise them clearly before giving supporting details.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a basic paragraph structure, moving from an introduction and overview to details about the library’s sections. This gives the reader some sense of organisation. However, progression is not consistently clear: the second paragraph says the tables and chairs moved, while the next paragraph refers to objects in the centre being moved to the left, making the changes difficult to follow. Phrases such as “In first view” and “and from now of” do not clearly signal how the information relates. Organise the description by areas or by the most significant changes, and use straightforward links such as “In the former layout,” “Today,” and “By contrast” to make comparisons easier to track.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant vocabulary for describing a plan, including “hallway,” “information desk,” “self-service machines,” and “storytelling events.” This gives you a basic range for the task. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unclear, such as “rounded tables,” “turned into some rooms,” and “room that used to place CDs.” Spelling errors in “refrence” and “Cafe” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise terms that describe locations and changes, for example “circular tables,” “was converted into,” and “the room that previously housed CDs.” A wider set of accurate verbs such as “relocated,” “replaced,” and “added” would help you report the plan more clearly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt a range of sentence forms, including a comparison in “The room on bottom right side has turned into Cafe” and a longer sentence describing the former media room. However, complex sentences are often faulty, and errors frequently make the relationships between changes difficult to understand. For example, “visualized it how the floor plan … was looked like” has an incorrect verb construction, while “the rounded tables and chairs that was” has an agreement error. Articles and tense are also inconsistent in “in previously it was enquiry desk.” Practise clear past-versus-present comparisons, such as “The area was an enquiry desk, but it is now a café,” and check subject–verb agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries.
