IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows the floor plan of a public library 20 years ago and how it looks now.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Central Library 20 years ago

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The diagram illustrates a comparison between the layout of a public library 20 years ago and now.

Overall, several new and advanced facilities have been developed in the library. The corridor which was occupied with tables and chairs has now been vacated. A new cafe has been established to the right of the entrance. Moreoever, the children's room is now a lecture room.

In the past, the left of the entrance was dedicated to readers for reading newspapers and magazines. This is now converted into a computer room. The space right above, has now converted to a gallery for all reference books. The top left of the central library which was a space for videos, computer games and CDs is now a facility for story telling events with a section for children's fiction books. There are two sofa's allocated in this area.

The space between the lecture room and the cafe now has an information desk which was earlier located to the right of the entrance. This desk has adult fiction books to its north and three self service machines to its south. The entrance remains at the same spot across the two decades

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main transformation clearly: the central tables and chairs have been removed, the former reading room is now a computer room, and the entrance remains in place. You also report several useful changes in the upper and right-hand areas. This meets the task well, but some details are incomplete or imprecise. For example, the former children’s-books room became a lecture room, while the children’s fiction and storytelling area occupies the former media room; your overview says “the children's room is now a lecture room” without distinguishing these spaces. The information desk was not previously to the right of the entrance: the old enquiry desk was there, so this comparison misidentifies the feature. More precise coverage of the changed sections would strengthen the response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs describing changes by location. This makes the comparison reasonably easy to follow, and phrases such as “In the past” and “This is now converted” help signal change. However, progression within the final paragraph is less clear: “The space between the lecture room and the cafe” is followed by desk details and then a reference to where the desk was earlier, which can confuse the reader because the old enquiry desk and new information desk are not the same feature. Some linking is also mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “now.” Grouping the changes more consistently by area and using clearer references would improve cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a suitable range of vocabulary for describing a floor plan, including “dedicated,” “converted,” “facility,” and “remains,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “self service machines” and “story telling events.” However, some choices are imprecise or unnatural for this task: “advanced facilities” is an unsupported evaluation, “gallery” does not accurately describe the reference-book area, and “vacated” is not the most natural way to say that tables and chairs were removed. Spelling and form also need attention in “Moreoever,” “cafe,” and “sofa's.” More precise location and change vocabulary would help you describe the plan with greater control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex structures, including the relative clause in “which was occupied with tables and chairs” and the comparison “across the two decades.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. In “The space right above, has now converted,” the comma is unnecessary and the passive construction needs “has now been converted.” Similarly, “which was a space” would be clearer as “which contained,” and “There are two sofa's allocated” has an incorrect plural form and an awkward passive structure. The sentence beginning “The space between the lecture room and the cafe now has…” also needs clearer grammatical framing to distinguish the current layout from the earlier one. Review passive forms, articles, and punctuation around introductory phrases.
