Central Library 20 years ago
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The figure illustrates the local library's floor plan that was 20 years ago and how library look right now after renovation.
Overall, the entrance and surface area of library stayed the same along with the areas of all other rooms except the room in north-west corner was expanded. Almost all of the appointed sections changed to other sections and seating arrangements also changed.
Before renovation, after entering the library there used to be Enquiry desk on right and reading room on the left and seating area in middle of the library. But now it has changed to Cafe on right side and computer room on left side with seating shifting to a big room in north-west corner of library that used to provide the CDs, videos and computer games and now it has services like Children's fiction books and story telling events.
Walking ahead in middle of library there used to be adult non-fiction books on right and adult fiction books on left. But now you'll find self-service machines, information desk and adult fiction books section on right side and all reference books on left side.
In north-east corner, there used to be the children books room which is now a Lecture room.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main transformation clearly: the library’s entrance and general footprint remain, while several functions are relocated or replaced. The comparisons are mostly grounded in the plan, including the former enquiry desk and reading room becoming a café and computer room, and the former children’s room becoming a lecture room. This gives the response a clear overview and relevant supporting details. However, the overview is somewhat broad: “almost all” sections changed, but some areas are more specifically reorganised, and the central tables and chairs are removed rather than simply having their seating arrangements changed. The north-west room is described as expanded, which is not supported by the plan. More precise coverage of the central area and the new self-service facilities would make the account more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a coherent overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and then comparisons organised by areas of the library. Phrases such as “Before renovation” and “Walking ahead in middle of library” help signal the movement through the plan, and the reader can generally follow the changes. The contrast between past and present is also maintained throughout. At times, however, the progression relies on repeated “But now” constructions, and the spatial sequence is not always fully clear—for example, “Walking ahead in middle” is less precise than identifying the central area directly. The final paragraph adds a useful corner comparison but feels slightly detached from the preceding route. Use more varied linking and clearer location-based grouping to make the progression smoother.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a suitable range of vocabulary for describing a library plan, including “floor plan,” “renovation,” “seating area,” “self-service machines,” and “north-east corner.” These terms communicate the main changes effectively, and the response attempts some less common expressions such as “appointed sections.” However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural: “appointed sections” is not the right term for library areas, “surface area” suggests a measured size, and “seating shifting to a big room” is imprecise. “Story telling” should be written as “storytelling,” and “Cafe” is conventionally written “café.” Aim for precise map vocabulary such as “facilities,” “sections,” “relocated,” and “designated as,” while avoiding informal wording like “big room.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including a relative clause in “the room in north-west corner … that used to provide” and contrasts joined with “But now.” Meaning is generally clear, but some grammatical errors remain, particularly with articles, verb forms, and sentence construction. For example, “how library look right now” needs a subject and correct verb form (“how the library looks now”), while “the entrance and surface area of library stayed” needs articles and more natural agreement. In “there used to be Enquiry desk,” the singular count noun requires an article. The long sentence beginning “with seating shifting” also makes the relationship between the changes less controlled. Proofread articles and verb forms, and divide overloaded sentences to improve accuracy.
