Central Library 20 years ago

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given image gives information about the comparison of the floor plan of a community library 20 years ago and today. I can see many places got changed during these years and I will explain those in details.

In the first chart, about 20 years ago, central library has comparatively fewer areas than the today's plan. I can see that there is no change in the Entrance during these years. The plan have different areas in place like CDs, videos, computer games which are removed in the recent plan. Additionaly, Children's books area which was at the right top corner moved to the left top corner in the current plan, and there are 2 sofas added in the room.

In current library plan, tables & chairs removed completely, therefore, there is extra space in the middle of the library. Moreover, they add extra area like Cafe and self-service machines by removing some areas from previos plan.

Overall, recent plan has more relevant areas for today's generation.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify several important changes, including the removal of the central tables and chairs, the addition of a café and self-service machines, and the relocation of the children’s area. However, the account covers the plans only partially: it says the CDs, videos and games area was removed, but does not mention that the current plan adds a lecture room, computer room, storytelling space and information desk. It also overlooks the changes to adult fiction, reference books and the former reading room. The overview, “more relevant areas for today’s generation,” is a broad judgement rather than a clear summary of the main spatial changes. To strengthen the response, compare the main areas systematically and describe what replaced or changed each one.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, a paragraph about the earlier plan, a paragraph about the current plan, and a concluding overview. This makes the comparison easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Moreover” and “Overall” help signal relationships between ideas. The progression is not fully effective, however, because the description moves between locations and changes without a consistent organising principle. For example, the children’s area is discussed in the earlier-plan paragraph, while other major room changes are omitted rather than grouped for comparison. Some links, such as “therefore,” express a consequence that is not clearly established. Organise details by location or by old-to-new changes, and use references that make each comparison explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic vocabulary to communicate several features of the plans, including “floor plan,” “Entrance,” “tables & chairs,” “sofas,” and “self-service machines.” There are also attempts at more descriptive language, such as “removed completely” and “extra space.” However, word choice and collocation are often imprecise or repetitive: “places got changed,” “areas in place,” and “extra area” do not describe the layout naturally. Spelling errors in “Additionaly” and “previos” are noticeable, and “Cafe” should be written “café” or “cafe” consistently. Aim for precise map vocabulary such as “was converted into,” “was relocated,” and “was replaced by,” while checking spelling and choosing natural collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of simple statements and longer sentences joined with clauses, as in “Children’s books area which was at the right top corner moved…” and “tables & chairs removed completely, therefore…”. The main meaning is generally understandable, but errors in verb forms, agreement and sentence construction recur. For example, “the plan have” should be “the plan has,” and “they add extra area” needs a past-tense form such as “they added” or a passive construction such as “an area was added.” The opening phrase “I can see” also makes the description less direct. Practise accurate past-tense and passive forms for describing changes, and punctuate linked clauses carefully; this will let you use more complex comparisons without losing control.
