Central Library 20 years ago

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram illustrate the changment of the floor of a public library 20 years ago and now.

Overall, the central library seen a huge change now compared to 20 years ago, before it has only CDs, video, computer games, children's books, reading room, an enquiry desk, adult and non adult fictions of books and some tables and chairs. But now, it added to these elements a place for storytelling events and some sofas, a lecture room, a café, an information desk and a some self-service machines.

The central library 20 years ago was divided into different sections. In the first place, an enquiry desk for tichkets, book returns on the right the entrance. On the left, there was a reading room full of newspapers and magazines. On the center of the library some tables and chairs for readers and visiters. Adult fiction and non-fiction books was there. On the north of the library, there was a place fot children's books and another dedicated for CD's, videos and computer games.

After a lot of changes, the central library now is composed of many other sections plus the old ones. To begin with, on the right of the entrance the enquiry desk 20 years ago became a huge café for users and visitors to have a good time there and relax. The reading room on the left is changed to a computer room. The tables and chairs on the center are removed. But the adult fiction books stood there with an information desk ans dome self-service machines. And a section for all reference books was added. On the north of the library, instead of a room for children's book, it became for lecture. On the other side, instead of the CD's, videos and computer games room, it became for story telling events with sofas in it and the children's fiction books was placed there too.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You cover both time periods and identify the main transformation: the library has been reorganised, with new facilities such as a café, lecture room, computer room and storytelling area. You also compare several corresponding spaces, for example, the former reading room becoming a computer room and the children’s-books room becoming a lecture room. Some details, however, are inaccurate or unclear: the enquiry desk is replaced by the café, rather than simply becoming a café “for users … to relax,” and the adult fiction area remains but is relocated to the middle-right, not described as having “stood there.” The overview lists many features but does not clearly summarise the broad shift in layout and use. Prioritise the major relocations and replacements, and report them precisely.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction and overview are followed by a description of the former plan and then the current one. This makes the comparison easy to follow, and sequencing phrases such as “In the first place” and “After a lot of changes” help signal progression. However, some linking is mechanical, and the repeated “On the left,” “On the north,” and “instead of” patterns make the account feel like a list. A few references are also unclear, particularly “these elements” and “the old ones,” since several facilities were removed or relocated rather than retained. Grouping changes by area or by type—replacements, removals and additions—and using clearer references would strengthen cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of vocabulary for describing a library plan, including “divided into different sections,” “dedicated,” “removed,” and “self-service machines.” These choices communicate the main changes, and you attempt some less common expressions. However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable, including “changment,” “tichkets,” “visiters,” and “dome,” while phrases such as “non adult fictions of books” and “a good time there” are imprecise or unnatural for this task. Use standard labels from the plan where possible, such as “adult non-fiction books,” and choose concise, accurate verbs such as “was replaced by” or “was converted into.” Proofreading spelling and collocations would make your descriptions more precise.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and longer sentences, including comparisons with “instead of” and clauses introduced by “After.” The overall meaning is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “The diagram illustrate” needs subject–verb agreement, and “the central library seen a huge change” needs a suitable verb form, such as “has undergone.” There are also errors in articles and agreement in “a some self-service machines” and “the children’s fiction books was placed there.” Some sentence boundaries and comma use make longer descriptions harder to process. Practise accurate past and present forms when comparing the two plans, and check agreement, articles and plural nouns in each sentence.
