Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Central Library 20 years ago
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram provide the previous design of a public library 20 years ago and also illustrate the current floor plan after redevelopment.
Overall, the design is almost same but there are some new additional facilities such as café, lecture room, information desk and so on.
20 years ago, tables and chair were placed at the centre of the library which removed in current floor plan. The computer games section is replaced with a area where story telling events are arranged with seating arrangement including a section for children's fiction books. While the section which previously consisted the adult fiction books are now consists reference books. On the southwest corner, the reading room is converted into a computer room while on the northwest corner a new café is developed in place of enquiry desk. Children's books corner on the northeast side is now the lecture room. The east side is now rearranged where the information desk is at the centre and self service machines are on the south side of the desk while adult fiction books corner is on the north side.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You give a clear overview that the layout is broadly similar but has gained facilities, then report the main changes across the plan. Several comparisons are accurate: the central tables and chairs have been removed, the former reading room is now a computer room, and the children’s-books room has become a lecture room. However, there are important location and content errors: the café is in the southeast, not the northwest, and the former enquiry-desk area is now a café; the former CDs/videos/games room became the children’s-fiction and storytelling room. The east-side description also reverses the positions: adult fiction is in the middle, while the self-service machines are below it. Correcting these misreadings and describing the new reference-book area more precisely would make the account more consistently accurate.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a sensible overall sequence: an introduction, a broad overview, and then a paragraph describing changes. Spatial language such as “southwest corner,” “northeast side,” and “east side” helps the reader follow the plan. However, the final paragraph packs many changes into one long sequence, and the repeated “while” constructions make relationships between features less clear. Some references are also difficult to track, particularly “the section” and “the desk,” because the relevant areas are not always named precisely. Grouping the changes by side of the library, and using clearer links such as “In the west…” and “By contrast, on the east…”, would improve progression and cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a relevant range of vocabulary for describing a library plan, including “redevelopment,” “converted,” “section,” and “self service machines.” These choices communicate the general nature of the changes, although some phrases are imprecise or unnatural, such as “the design is almost same,” “a area,” and “a new café is developed.” “Seating arrangement” is also less direct than describing the sofas shown in the room. The vocabulary is adequate for the task, but more precise collocations and consistent compound forms would make the report sound more natural. For example, use “layout” for the plan’s arrangement and “was replaced by” to describe a change in use.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses beginning with “which” and “while,” and the main meaning is generally understandable. However, some grammatical errors recur. The opening says “The diagram provide” rather than “The diagram provides,” and “tables and chair were placed … which removed” needs a plural noun and a passive construction (“tables and chairs … which have been removed”). There are also errors in “a area” and “the section … are now consists,” where article use and verb structure are faulty. The long final sentence also needs clearer sentence boundaries. Check subject–verb agreement, articles, and passive forms, then proofread complex sentences to ensure each clause is grammatically complete.
