IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Owning a home and living on rent have own benifits. Both trend have seen in many countries. It has higher ratio in cities. The increasing population has largely impact on the value of property and and amount of rent. Their check and balance are very important.

Having own house is a big blessing. You do not have any tension of moving anywhere and not the rent expense. You can make renovation as you wish and no need to ask any one. You feel more comfortable when you have own house. You freely buy decoration pieces for your house which tenant avoides because they change houses frequently. Apart from all the benifits there is a drawback that you need large amount of money to get ownership of house. For this you may take loan. Another issue is property tax and other taxes that owner liable to pay the government and if it comes into the commercial area further taxes may also be imposed.

Moreover, tenants use a complete home by paying a small amount as compared to property value. Most of the time they do not need to buy any thing as these already available in the house. Due to this their furniture expense also become safe. They only have to pay rent and utility bills and safe from any property tax. They can easily easily move if they have remote jobs. Beside these , they have fear of ending contract period. After passing due date any time the owner can order to empty his house.

Overall, you need a high amount for purchasing house but after that you are free to do any thing with your house while living on a rent is benificial for remote job holders but you have to pay a rent through out the life untill you own it.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You address both parts of the question by giving reasons people value home ownership and discussing advantages and disadvantages of renting and owning. Points such as avoiding rent, being able to renovate, and the security of not having to move are relevant. However, the response does not clearly answer whether this situation is positive or negative: the conclusion compares the two options but does not state a firm overall judgement. Some ideas are also listed rather than explained, and the opening comments about population, property values, and “check and balance” are not clearly connected to the question. State your position directly and develop a few reasons with clearer explanation or examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a basic paragraph structure, moving from an introduction to ownership, renting, and a conclusion. This helps the reader identify the main topics. However, the overall progression is not consistently clear: the opening introduces population and property prices without showing how they relate to the main argument, and the conclusion does not resolve the question. Linking phrases such as “Moreover,” “Apart from all the benefits,” and “Overall” are used, but some connections feel mechanical or do not make the relationship between ideas precise. There is also repetition, for example “easily easily,” and unclear referencing in “these already available in the house.” Organise each body paragraph around one main point and connect supporting details explicitly.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate several relevant ideas, including “ownership,” “renovation,” “property tax,” “utility bills,” and “contract period.” There are also attempts at less common expressions, such as “commercial area” and “remote jobs.” However, the range is limited and some word choices or collocations are inaccurate, which can make meaning less clear: “living on rent,” “their furniture expense also become safe,” and “order to empty his house” are not natural in this context. Spelling errors such as “benifits,” “avoides,” and “benificial” are noticeable. Build a more precise set of housing-related phrases and check spelling and collocations so your ideas sound natural and exact.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both short statements and longer sentences, including clauses with “because,” “when,” and “if.” This gives some variety, but the range is limited and complex sentences are often faulty. Errors in agreement and sentence construction appear in “Both trend have seen,” “The increasing population has largely impact,” and “their furniture expense also become safe.” Articles and verb forms are also inconsistent, as in “owner liable to pay” and “you need a high amount for purchasing house.” Punctuation and sentence boundaries need attention, particularly where ideas are joined into long sentences. Practise building accurate subject–verb patterns and checking each sentence for a complete, correctly formed clause before adding more complexity.
