IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

People in different countries believe that buying home is more logical than renting one. Having a home gives stability and less hustle to move around after the renting period. I belive this is a positive mindset.

Nowadays, buying home is crucial to have a stable life. However, the individual buying one may face the struggles of finding a good home, in a good place, with suitable price. Therefore, people go for the easier option which is renting one. Furthermore, having a home will free you from the monthly rent, but it will still cost the housing expenses as bills and maintainence. Overall, there will be less costs monthly but a large initial deposit that is needed to be paid at once.

Another point to mention is the hustle to find a new place after the renting period is over. Finding a new place after getting used on the current home is a hard feeling. It disturbes the individual and family routine. Also, to find a new place at the same neigheborhood can cost you more money than the amount was being paid. Thus, people always think of finding a place to build their life and memories in, without the idea of moving around.

In my opinion, to have a permenant home is crucial and a positive decision. However, a temporary rented home can save money and effort until the one find the proper home to bought. The decision of buying a home has different aspects to think about: location, neigheborhood, facilities and others. Therefore, taking the adequate time to choose between different choices is essential.

In conclusion, as a positive call, an owned home facilitate stability and less trouble to move around, but a rented home can be a temporary place for taking the proper choice of buying a new home.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both parts of the question: you explain why people value ownership, especially for stability and avoiding repeated moves, and you clearly state that you see this preference as positive. The discussion of costs adds a relevant qualification, including the initial payment and ongoing housing expenses. However, some points are more developed than others. The reasons for valuing a permanent home are explained with personal and family routines, while the financial argument is less clear: the claim that ownership means “less costs monthly” is not fully supported or balanced against mortgage and maintenance costs. Develop each reason with a precise explanation or example, and make the positive judgement more explicit in the conclusion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction, two paragraphs explaining reasons, a paragraph giving your view, and a conclusion. Ideas generally progress from stability and costs to the inconvenience of moving, and linking expressions such as “Furthermore,” “Thus,” and “In conclusion” help signal relationships. At times, however, the connections feel mechanical, and some references are unclear. For example, “the easier option” appears to refer to renting, but the preceding sentence focuses on the difficulty of buying; the contrast could be made more explicit. The final paragraph also repeats the stability and moving points rather than drawing the reasons together. Use clearer transitions between ownership and renting, and ensure each paragraph has a distinct purpose.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of vocabulary, including “stability,” “initial deposit,” “neighborhood,” and “facilities,” which helps communicate the main ideas. There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, such as “build their life and memories in.” However, several word-choice and collocation problems make the expression less natural: “less hustle,” “a positive call,” and “a hard feeling” do not convey your meaning precisely. Spelling errors such as “belive,” “maintainence,” “disturbes,” “neigheborhood,” and “permenant” also reduce accuracy. Aim for natural combinations such as “the inconvenience of moving” and “a positive development,” and proofread carefully for spelling and word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “However,” “Therefore,” and “until,” and most of the message remains understandable. Some grammatical errors occur, particularly with articles, verb forms, and agreement. For example, “buying home” needs an article, “until the one find” has an incorrect verb form, and “an owned home facilitate” has a subject–verb agreement problem. In “a temporary rented home,” the adjective construction is also not formed correctly. These errors do not usually prevent understanding, but they make the writing less controlled. Review article use with singular countable nouns, subject–verb agreement, and verb patterns after “to” and “until”; then check each sentence for a clear grammatical subject.
