IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In certain countries it is important for the people to own a home rather than renting one. This case might happen because people may choose to buy a home with their saving and loans, rather then spending expensive rents for their house every months. I belive this has both positive and negative situation, and i will explain that with examples in this essay.

On the one hand, owning a home enable people to live freely in their own ways. If people want to change any part of their house, they are independent to do that without any conditions. It does not require to follow or maintain any rules and regulations enforced by houseowners, which usually requires in case of rented house. For instance, I wanted to paint in the wall of my room. As I live in a rented house I had to take permission from the owner and I was rejected to do that. If owned the house, I could have the freedom to paint my wall.

On the other hand, Owning a home means people must live there permanently. They cannot shift the house, which often create problems, especially when schools or workplaces are located in ditance from home. By contrast, it is easier for rented houses to be shifted beside workplaces or schools. For example, initially my university was too far from my house, then I shifted to a new rented house which is very close to my campus.

In conclusion, in many development countries it is easier for people to afford a home by savings or loans as rents are very high. So it is important for them to buy a home however owing a home can have both postive and negative situation such as freedom of living and difficult in moving.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the question: it suggests that high rents encourage people to buy, and it presents both benefits and drawbacks. The position that home ownership has positive and negative aspects is clear, although the task asks whether this is a positive or negative situation, so a more definite overall judgement would strengthen the response. The examples about needing permission to paint and moving closer to university make the two sides relevant and understandable. However, the reasons why ownership is especially important in some countries are only briefly explained, and the conclusion mainly repeats the points rather than weighing them. Develop the causes more fully and state which side you consider more significant.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, separate paragraphs for advantages and disadvantages, and a conclusion. The contrast signposts “On the one hand” and “On the other hand” help readers follow the discussion, and the personal examples are placed with the relevant points. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some of the clearer progression associated with a stronger performance. However, links between ideas can feel mechanical, and some references are unclear: “This case” in the introduction does not precisely identify the situation, while “which often create problems” has an unclear connection to the preceding claim. Use more precise referencing and connect each explanation to its main point rather than relying mainly on set phrases.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the main ideas, with relevant terms such as “renting,” “independent,” “permission,” and “permanently.” The writer also attempts topic-related expressions, including “rules and regulations” and “afford a home.” However, noticeable word-choice, collocation, word-form, and spelling errors limit precision: “spending expensive rents,” “every months,” “development countries,” and “difficult in moving” are not natural or accurate expressions. There are also repeated basic words such as “house” and “home.” Build a more precise range for discussing housing costs, security, and mobility, and check spelling and word forms. These improvements would make the message more fluent and reduce moments when the reader has to interpret the intended meaning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex forms, including conditional structures such as “If people want to change any part of their house” and a contrast introduced by “By contrast.” Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors occur across the response. Examples include subject–verb agreement in “owning a home enable people” and “which often create problems,” article and sentence-structure problems in “If owned the house,” and tense or verb-form issues in “I was rejected to do that.” Capitalisation and punctuation are also inconsistent, as in “On the other hand, Owning.” Work on agreement, complete conditional clauses, and accurate verb patterns, then proofread sentence openings and punctuation. More consistently controlled complex sentences would improve accuracy without sacrificing range.
