IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Nowadays , owning a property rather than a rental accomodatioon is very important for individuals in certain countries. I stongly agree with this positive development and there are many seval reasons behind this .

To start with the first main reason is finacial security. Owning a house is a long term investment for life time as we dont have to worry that our money will get waste or not.

As the prices of the property are increased day by day so buying a house at right time is a good decision in person's life. Owners of the houses can build futhur properties and the main thing is that they also do not have to worry about their monthly rent payment as people get upset while paying rents from their salaries because rents are getting high over a period of time.

Other benefit of owning a house is stability and independence. Having a personal home provides a feeling of belonging and security. They feel like they are in safe place and somewhere that onlu belongs to them. Other positive points is that individuals do not have to change houses again and again as in rental houses the landlord give notice to leave the house whenever they want because they get people who will pay them more rent.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address both parts of the question: you give reasons for the importance of home ownership, including financial security and stability, and state that you see it as positive. The examples about avoiding rent increases and not having to move when a landlord gives notice are relevant. However, the position is only briefly supported, and the financial argument that property prices rise is asserted rather than explained. The response also does not meet the required minimum length, so there is limited space to develop the reasons or consider the issue more fully. To strengthen the response, explain each reason with a clearer cause-and-effect link and add a developed example or qualification, while maintaining a clear positive or negative judgement throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph about financial security, and a paragraph about stability and independence. Sequencing phrases such as “To start with” and “Other benefit” help signal the main points. However, progression within the body paragraphs is sometimes unclear: the discussion moves from investment to rising prices, building further properties, and rent payments without showing how each point connects. Some linking is also mechanical, and “Other positive points” introduces an idea without a clear transition from the previous sentence. Use one focused paragraph for each reason, connect supporting details explicitly, and add a concise conclusion to make the overall progression more complete.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “financial security,” “long term investment,” “stability,” “independence,” and “feeling of belonging.” These phrases help communicate the main ideas. However, the range is limited and several spelling and word-choice errors make the writing less clear or natural, such as “accomodatioon,” “stongly,” “seval,” and “futhur.” Some expressions are also awkward, including “our money will get waste” and “safe place.” Aim to check spelling carefully and learn natural collocations for housing and finance. More precise vocabulary would also help distinguish between owning a home as an investment and owning one for personal security.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, including a reason clause beginning “as” and a sentence explaining that landlords may give notice. The main meaning is generally understandable, but errors in sentence construction, agreement, articles, and punctuation occur often enough to affect fluency. For example, “As the prices of the property are increased day by day so buying…” combines clauses awkwardly, while “Other positive points is” has a subject–verb agreement problem. There are also missing apostrophes in “dont” and “person's life” is not used consistently with the surrounding general statements. Practise building complete sentences with one clear main clause, and check agreement, articles, and punctuation when editing.
