IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Owning a home rather than renting, in this contemporary social landscape, has become a crucial aspect of our lives. There are many states in the world where you can not even think of surviving without having your home. The significance of having your own residence lies in a fact that it provides you a permanent shelter which leads to an organized lifestyle. I think owning a house is totally a positive developement as it can help a person to escape from many problems like giving monthly rents and mental tension.

The first and foremost reason that why is there a need of an owned house is that it provides a safe shelter to the people. A person can do whatever he wants in his own home. Moreover, people who live in a rented house can not ivest too much on that place because it is not belonged to them. In contrast, a person who has his own home can invest freely on its structure and maintainance.

In addition, the practice of owning a home rather than renting it is a positve developement in a society. For example, there are many families in different countries of the world who find it difficult to pay the monthly rents of their residences. Apart from this, it also creates an additional burden on the responsible member of a family and creates mental pressure. Such families find it much difficult to copeup with this issue. Therforefore, having a home is much better rather than renting.

In conclusion, I would say that owning a home is a positive trend and a person must try to own a house with his savings which will be good for him in future. This is because renting creates a lot of financial and mental problems for the families.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both parts of the question: you suggest that home ownership offers security and freedom to improve a property, and you clearly regard it as positive. The discussion of rent-related financial and mental pressure is relevant, and the conclusion restates your view. However, the reasons are not developed equally. The point about being able to invest in and maintain one’s own home is introduced but not explained with a concrete consequence, while the claim that people cannot “think of surviving” without a home is broad and unclear. To strengthen the response, explain why ownership matters in the countries concerned—for example, through housing security, cultural expectations, or limited rental protections—and support each reason with a specific illustration.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your position, two body paragraphs present reasons, and a conclusion reinforces the view. Linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “In addition,” and “In conclusion” help signal the stages of the argument. However, some connections feel mechanical, and the second body paragraph largely repeats the financial and mental-pressure point rather than extending the discussion. The opening body sentence, “The first and foremost reason that why is there a need,” is also awkwardly organised, making the progression less smooth. Build a clearer sequence within each paragraph: state one reason, explain its effect, and then give an example. Use referencing such as “this financial strain” to connect ideas without repeating them.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of topic-related vocabulary, including “permanent shelter,” “organized lifestyle,” “monthly rents,” and “mental pressure.” These choices make your main ideas understandable, and you attempt more formal expressions such as “contemporary social landscape.” However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, including “positive developement,” “not belonged to them,” “copeup with this issue,” and “a person must try to own a house with his savings.” Spelling errors such as “ivest,” “maintainance,” and “Therforefore” also reduce accuracy. Aim for natural combinations and precise forms: for instance, say “invest in a rented property” or “cope with the financial burden.” Proofreading would help you retain your range while making the wording more reliable.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “a permanent shelter which leads to an organized lifestyle” and a conditional structure in “which will be good for him in future.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “the first and foremost reason that why is there a need” has faulty question-word order, and “people who live in a rented house can not ivest too much on that place because it is not belonged to them” contains an incorrect passive construction. There are also issues with articles and phrasing, as in “lies in a fact.” Practise forming indirect statements (“the reason is that…”) and review verb patterns such as “belong to” and “invest in.”
