IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Nowdays, we noticed that the issue of housing has increased a lot espeacially on the first world including north america , Europe , and some countries of Asia.most people are complaining about the rent fees and they believed that buying new house costs so expensive and it seems a quiet impossible for them. However, they considered owning house is a crucial part specifically on the modern days.

First of all, owning a house may help u in solving a big ammount of money, renting only one room in some countries costs more than 600 euros which is unbelievable shift and it's not suitable for all the people especially the employees. For instance, a new statistics made in canada about spending money on appartments, they found out more than the half of canadian's salary is delivered only for the rent fees.

Secondly,a person who own his proper house may not facing any kind of problems especially those related with neighboors and this would help him in being in good situtaion without being affraid of getting out of the houde at anytime because of neighboors' feedback. For exemple, a lot of individuals had faced a big issues with their neighboors and they found themselves out of the house that they were rented without any previouse warning.

On the other hand ,there is a category of people who believed that renting house is more comfortable than owning ones.In which they saw that owning new houses would cost a shift that anyone could carry it and they proved that in United State of America in which on small bedroom could reach more [redacted phone] dollars which is something crazy.

At the end , i think that renting house is more releavant for the majority of people especially the work payers but i cannot deny that the employers could afford that large ammount of money in buying new house which is something more suitable for them and that could help them to solve their money.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You address both questions by suggesting that people value ownership because rent is expensive and owning may offer greater security, then giving your view that renting is more suitable for most people while ownership suits those who can afford it. However, the response only partially develops these points. The claim that ownership helps people save money is not clearly explained, since buying a home also involves substantial costs, and the neighbour example is difficult to follow. Your position is also mixed: the introduction presents ownership as crucial, while the conclusion favours renting. Make your stance consistent and explain the reasons behind it more fully, including why home ownership is important in the countries mentioned.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, two supporting paragraphs, a contrasting paragraph and a conclusion. Sequencing phrases such as “First of all,” “Secondly” and “On the other hand” help signal the stages of the discussion. However, progression is not always clear because some ideas are joined without showing their relationship. For example, the first paragraph moves from high rent to the claim that owning saves money without explaining the comparison. The neighbour example also does not clearly connect to the point about security. The conclusion introduces “work payers” and “employers” without clarifying who these groups are. Use clearer topic sentences and connect each example directly to the claim it supports.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some vocabulary relevant to housing and affordability, including “rent fees,” “salary,” “neighbours” and “owning a house,” so the main topic is generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, sometimes making meaning difficult to interpret. Phrases such as “solving a big amount of money,” “a shift that anyone could carry it” and “work payers” do not express the intended ideas clearly. Spelling errors, including “Nowdays,” “espeacially” and “appartments,” are also noticeable. Build a more precise set of expressions for costs, financial pressure, housing security and affordability, and check spelling and collocations when editing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “because” and “which,” but complex sentences are often faulty and errors occur frequently. Examples include “a person who own his proper house may not facing,” where the verb forms and agreement are incorrect, and “they believed that buying new house costs so expensive,” which has problems with tense, articles and sentence construction. There are also incomplete or awkward structures, such as “In which they saw,” and punctuation is inconsistent, with missing spaces after commas and full stops. These errors sometimes make the reader work to understand your meaning. Practise accurate subject–verb agreement, verb patterns and sentence boundaries before adding more complex clauses.
