IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In today's rapidly evolving world, many people have inclined towards owning their own home rather than renting one, which is undoubtedly important for people in several ways. In my view, it is a positive situation, but drawbacks coming along with this, cannot fully ignored. I think, this might be a case due to the skyrocketing rent with limited amenities. This topic holds considerable significance in contemporary society.

Paying too much money over an accomodation can be considered as one of the society-deteriorating act. In return of the prices they pay, they are recieving only a few amenities. This may be beneficial for the landlord, but what about the tenants. Another point to consider, tenants have to follow all the rules and regulations, which can be frustrating sometimes. Additionally, people feel much burden in living other's home, this is because they cannot live in the way they want.

Owning a home can be considered a positive situation. One of the main reasons is a feeling of homeliness, which can never come from a rented apartment. Additionally, this is long-term investment, on the other hand, renting a home for so long can be a waste of money. Furthermore, if a person owns a house, he can make further changes in it independently. He does not require any permission to do so.

In conclusion, paying too rent without expecting good facilities can be really frustrating. This a positive situation, because people who own house are considered more happy, and this give them a feeling of satisfaction.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both parts of the question: you suggest that high rents and limited amenities encourage people to buy, and you clearly state that home ownership is positive. The points about investment, personal freedom to make changes, and a sense of belonging are relevant. However, some ideas are asserted rather than explained. For example, the claim that renting is “a waste of money” would be stronger if you explained how ownership builds equity or provides long-term security. The reasons behind the importance of owning a home could also be developed beyond dissatisfaction with landlords and rental conditions. Your position is clear, but fuller explanation and specific support for the main points would make the response more complete and persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph on renting, a paragraph supporting ownership, and a conclusion. This makes the main line of argument easy to follow. You also use signposting such as “Additionally” and “Furthermore” to connect related points. At times, however, these links feel mechanical, and some connections between ideas are not fully clear. For instance, “This topic holds considerable significance” does not advance the argument after the introduction has already stated the position. The conclusion repeats earlier claims rather than drawing them together, and “This a positive situation” has an unclear reference. Use fewer formulaic transitions and make each paragraph progress through a clear claim, explanation, and example.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of topic-related vocabulary, including “skyrocketing rent,” “amenities,” “long-term investment,” and “rules and regulations.” These choices help communicate the main ideas, and you attempt some less common expressions. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “society-deteriorating act,” “in return of the prices,” and “feel much burden in living other's home.” There are also spelling errors, including “accomodation” and “recieving.” These do not prevent understanding, but they reduce precision and naturalness. Aim for familiar, accurate collocations rather than elaborate phrases, and check spelling carefully. More precise language for financial security and personal independence would also help you explain your argument effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “which can never come from a rented apartment” and a conditional structure in “if a person owns a house, he can make further changes.” Most ideas remain understandable. Some grammatical errors, however, occur in key sentences. For example, “drawbacks coming along with this, cannot fully ignored” needs a complete clause and passive form (“the drawbacks … cannot be fully ignored”), while “This a positive situation” is missing a verb. There are also issues with articles, agreement, and sentence construction, as in “people who own house … this give them.” Review articles and singular/plural agreement, and proofread each sentence for a complete subject and verb. Greater accuracy would make your varied structures more effective.
