IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 4.5)

The issue of whether owning a home is essential for eveyone instead of renting one has been a subject of debate in recent years. While some believe that ownership of house provides the permanent shelter of human being, I believe that it has many benefits of this situation.

To begin with, there are several reasons of this issue. Firstly, owning home give you a confortable environment and design according to your own style. For example, the number of people cannot afford the rent of the house due to inflammation of expenses in Pakistan. It observed that house id the only place where you feel freedom and no pressure on your mind. Therefore, people prefer own house because it is property for your children.

However, renting home has some demertits. First of all, people who earn monthly sould not affort rent of the house and they worked hard but cannnot afford

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

You identify home ownership as desirable and give relevant reasons, including having a home designed to suit your preferences and leaving property to children. However, the task is only partially addressed: the reasons are briefly stated, and the response does not clearly explain whether the situation is positive or negative. The discussion of renting begins with “renting home has some demerits” but is unfinished, so it does not provide a developed comparison or conclusion. The example about people being unable to afford rent in Pakistan is relevant but needs clearer explanation and support. The response is also 100 words below the required minimum, which limits how fully you can develop both parts of the question.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

There is a basic attempt to organise the response: an opening paragraph is followed by a paragraph beginning “To begin with,” and another introduced by “However.” These markers help signal a shift in focus. However, the overall progression is incomplete because the final paragraph stops mid-sentence, and there is no conclusion to bring the ideas together or restate your view. Some links between claims are also unclear: “Therefore” introduces the idea that a house is property for children without fully showing how this follows from the preceding point. Develop each paragraph around one clear point, connect examples explicitly to that point, and complete the discussion before moving to a conclusion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some topic-related vocabulary, such as “ownership,” “rent,” “property,” and “expenses,” and attempt phrases like “permanent shelter” and “freedom.” This gives you a basic range for discussing housing. However, several spelling and word-choice errors make parts of the response difficult to understand, including “eveyone,” “confortable,” “inflammation of expenses,” and “demertits.” Some combinations are also unnatural, such as “owning home” and “rent of the house.” Aim for accurate, natural collocations and check spelling carefully. More precise language would help express your ideas clearly without relying on repeated references to houses and affordability.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple sentences and a longer sentence beginning “While some believe…,” showing some effort to vary sentence structure. However, the range is limited, and errors occur frequently in basic sentence patterns. For example, “owning home give you” has problems with the article and subject–verb agreement, while “It observed that” is missing a suitable subject and verb form. In “people who earn monthly sould not affort rent … and they worked hard,” the tense and sentence structure are unclear. The final sentence is incomplete. Practise accurate articles, agreement, and complete clauses first, then build longer sentences using clear links between ideas.
