IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In many nation it is ongoing trend that many people are owing the house rather than renting. This prefrence is driven from the personal security and financial stability. In my opinion. it is positive development because it helps the people to save money for the future and helps the society in building the community.

The primary reason for the trend is when a individual lives in rented house he or she has to pay rent to the owner every month. Which is the permenent expenses but there is no future returns. However when a tentants pay amount to the owner all the money is gone forever. For example, when a person mortgage the house the payment slowly makes them to owns a house, it helps them in saving the money for the future. Additionally, the landlords can raise rent anytime or ask them to leave the house. Subsequently, owing a house make them feel safer because nobody can force them to leave the house.

From the border sense, this trend is beneficial both for the individual and the society. For the individual owns a house when he or she reach at old age and retired, it helps them at that time because they needs not need to pay rent , when they are not earning. For the society, when a person lives in the society for a long time. Consequently, he will take care of the own house and the neighbourhood. Therefore, they makes good friends which helps feel safer in the society and building a better community.

In conclusion, i believe people are owing houses because it helps them in securing the money in future and helps them feel safer. As a result this trend is positive development in the society, it helps them in building the financail stability among the people.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both parts of the prompt: you explain that people value home ownership for financial security and protection from landlords, and you clearly judge it to be positive. The reasons are relevant, and the mortgage example helps illustrate how payments can build ownership rather than simply cover rent. Your discussion also considers effects on individuals and the wider community. However, some points are asserted more than developed: the claim that owners build stronger communities, for instance, would benefit from a clearer explanation of how long-term residence leads to this outcome. The conclusion repeats the main ideas rather than adding a final insight. The response is well focused overall, with some ideas needing fuller support for a more complete development.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs addressing reasons and benefits, and a conclusion. The progression from personal financial security to wider social effects is easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Additionally,” “For example,” and “In conclusion” help signal relationships between ideas. At times, however, cohesion is mechanical or unclear. “From the border sense” does not clearly introduce the individual-versus-society distinction, and “Consequently” does not connect smoothly to the preceding sentence about caring for a house and neighbourhood. Some references, such as “they” in the final body paragraph, could be clearer. Use more precise transitions and connect each supporting sentence explicitly to its main point.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “financial stability,” “mortgage,” “landlords,” “retired,” and “neighbourhood.” These choices show an attempt to discuss both economic and social aspects, and the main meaning is generally understandable. However, noticeable spelling, word-form, and collocation problems reduce precision: “prefrence,” “permenent,” and “financail” are misspelled, while “owing the house” and “save the money” are not natural choices in these contexts. Some wording is also vague or awkward, such as “from the border sense.” Build accuracy with common housing collocations and check spelling and word forms carefully. A more varied and precise vocabulary would make the argument sound more fluent and controlled.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a conditional idea about renting and a sentence beginning “because nobody can force them to leave.” This gives the response some structural variety, and the central message remains understandable. However, errors occur across the response and sometimes make relationships between ideas difficult to follow. Examples include “In my opinion. it is positive development,” “when a individual lives,” and “a person mortgage the house”; these show problems with sentence boundaries, articles, and verb forms. Agreement is also inconsistent in “they needs not need to pay rent” and “they makes good friends.” Several sentences are fragments, including “Which is the permanent expenses.” Review sentence boundaries, subject–verb agreement, articles, and verb patterns, then proofread each sentence for a complete grammatical structure.
