IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Instead of living in a rented home or apartment, some people prefer to have a home of their own. Although there may be a number of causes involved, there are mainly two main causes: a sense of security and live independently. For me, it is not a positive situation even though there are several benefits of having a personal home.
First of all, some people feel secured if they have their own home as they do not have to think about paying rent or anything else every month. They feel it like an investment for a lifetime. Because the next generation can inherit this place after them. As a result, in some countries, people want to have a home and view it as a primary goal of their life.
Next, people who live in their own place do not have to think about the landlord. They can modify their home's structure or interior design according to their taste. However, it is not possible when people live in a rented apartment. Besides, older people can do gardening or other activities around their personal home to spend their free time. These things are quite impossible, if a person does not have his own home.
All in all, it is important to have a home for some people but not for all. Personally, I feel that it is better to stay in a rented place as we may need to change our accomodation because of our career or other reasons. If people live in a rented house then it will be easier to move according to their convenience. Therefore, I feel it is a negative development.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address both parts of the prompt: you explain why home ownership matters, citing security, avoiding rent, inheritance, and freedom to alter a property, then give a clear view that it is negative because renting makes relocation easier. This meets the task well, and your position is stated in the introduction and conclusion. Some supporting points, however, are asserted rather than fully explained. For example, the claim that owning a home provides security because people need not think about monthly rent could be balanced against mortgage or maintenance costs. The gardening point is relevant but less directly connected to why ownership is important in a country. Develop these ideas with clearer explanation and examples to make the response more consistently convincing.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two paragraphs explaining reasons for ownership, and a conclusion presenting your view. Sequencing is easy to follow, and signposts such as “First of all,” “Next,” and “All in all” help readers identify the stages of the argument. Some linking is mechanical, however, and a few connections between sentences are abrupt. “Because the next generation can inherit this place after them” is a fragment rather than a smoothly connected explanation of the investment point. The conclusion also introduces the advantage of renting without explicitly contrasting it with the earlier benefits of ownership. Use a wider range of natural links and make the relationship between each supporting point and the main argument more explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use adequate vocabulary to discuss housing and personal choice, including “sense of security,” “inherit,” “landlord,” “interior design,” and “career.” These choices make the main ideas clear, and you attempt some topic-specific phrasing. At times, however, word choice and collocation are imprecise or repetitive: “feel secured” is not the natural expression, “live independently” does not fit grammatically in the list of causes, and “personal home” is repeated where “owned property” or “home of their own” would be more natural. There is also a spelling error in “accomodation.” Aim for more precise housing-related vocabulary and check common collocations and spelling during revision.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including conditional and subordinate clauses such as “if they have their own home” and “as we may need to change our accommodation.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. “There are mainly two main causes” is redundant and structurally awkward, while “Because the next generation can inherit this place after them” is an incomplete sentence. In “These things are quite impossible, if a person does not have his own home,” the comma before the conditional clause is unnecessary. Review sentence boundaries, clause connections, and pronoun reference; combining the inheritance fragment with the preceding sentence would improve accuracy and flow.
