IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The importance of owning home has become a subject of considerable debate in modern society. While some people argue that own a home is important for people but others said that renting is more beneficial. Although both views have their own merits but I think having own home is important because personal home give much more satisfaction and relaxation as compared to rental one.

Having own home is the dream of everyone in today's society and many people have just aim to get a home for theirself and they work hard day and night for it and they think that it's positive for society to work hard and chase for their dreams. Furthermore, house owners get more intentions and also are more respectful in society. For example, if an individual have his house so people respect him and also get consult with him about their life problems and get their advice.

Moreover, some people think that having own home is not important and it's a negative situation because the prices of houses are touching the sky so instead of spending a huge amount of money on house, it's better to use this money for their well being and let this money work for them. For example, some people think that it's better to do business with that amount that we just stuck in buying a house and just stay in a rental house and can change the accomodation with time and don't get bored from 1 place.

To put in a nutshell, I sum up saying that having personal accomodation is most important and have positive impact on society because we are not bound to do things according to agreement as rental ones do. Some people do vary from it but it think people need to have their own home and they build and decorate it according to their taste and live a peaceful life there.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both parts of the prompt: you suggest that home ownership brings satisfaction, social respect and freedom to personalise a home, and you acknowledge that high prices can make renting or investing elsewhere attractive. Your view is clear in the introduction and conclusion, where you favour ownership and call it positive. However, the reasons ownership is especially important in some countries are not fully explained; the claim that owners receive more respect is asserted rather than supported, and the example about seeking their advice is not clearly linked to why ownership matters. Develop this point with a more convincing explanation, and make the positive-versus-negative judgement more directly reasoned throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs presenting reasons for ownership and renting, and a concluding position. Linking expressions such as “Furthermore,” “Moreover,” and “To put in a nutshell” help signal movement between points. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. The opening sentence of the second body paragraph shifts to the opposing view without clearly distinguishing it from your own position, and the long sentence beginning “Having own home is the dream…” combines several ideas without clear boundaries. References such as “this money” and “that amount” are understandable but repetitive. Use shorter, more focused sentences and make the relationship between each example and its main point explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a range of relevant vocabulary, including “considerable debate,” “well being,” “personal accommodation,” and “positive impact,” and the reader can generally understand your ideas. There are also attempts at less common or figurative expressions, such as “prices of houses are touching the sky.” However, several word choices and collocations are unnatural or imprecise: “get more intentions” does not convey a clear meaning, “for theirself” is not the appropriate form, and “bound to do things according to agreement” is awkward. Spelling errors such as “accomodation” also reduce accuracy. Aim for natural combinations such as “gain social respect,” “for themselves,” and “be restricted by a rental agreement,” and check spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including clauses introduced by “Although,” “because,” and “if,” so there is some variety in structure. Meaning is usually recoverable, but errors in agreement, articles, verb forms and sentence construction occur across the response. For example, “personal home give” needs subject–verb agreement, while “if an individual have his house” requires a different verb form. The opening also combines “While” and “Although” in a way that creates an incomplete or conflicting structure. Long sentences joined mainly with “and” make grammatical control harder to maintain. Practise accurate basic clauses first, then build complex sentences with one clear main clause and correctly formed subordinate clauses.
