IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Priotrizing homeownership over renting a home is getting increased in today's world. Having own home give financial stability and perseverance. It make people mentally healthy as they don't need be worried about chnaging place again and again. In some countries, it's crucial for boys to have their own home make them more diligent, responsible and mature enough to achieve such a milestone. Homeownership could also be the passive source of income for many of individuals. It gives financial freedom and relief from the fear of unpredictable decisions of landowners. As it has been shown the most reliable source of generational wealth.

On the other hand, to getting the house owned by oneself could be stressful. Social pressure leads oneself to depression. Achieving that milestone at a young age would make people stressed and desparate to own it. Personals might under goes long term mortgage and debt as a huge amount require to build own home which ultimately cause psychological and different health issues. Lack of resources could lead them to acquire wrong means to achieve this.

From my point of view, It impact in both positive as well as negative ways. If one can afford their own ao they should buy the one but if someone couldn't manage to buy, society should not pressurise them as it will not only make them unconfident but also drain their will power to achieve those things what they can. Despite owning a home provide sustainability it also could lead oneself towards certain financial and menatal issues, so one should prefer their well being instead of pleasing others.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both parts of the prompt: you suggest reasons for valuing ownership, including financial stability, security from landlords, and the possibility of building generational wealth, then consider the pressures and debts it can create. Your view that the situation has both positive and negative effects is clear, and the advice not to pressure people who cannot afford a home gives it a relevant conclusion. This meets the task well, though some ideas are more developed than others. For example, the claim that owning a home makes people “more diligent, responsible and mature” is asserted rather than explained, and the reference to “boys” is not clarified. To strengthen the response, explain the social or cultural reasons behind this preference and support key claims with a brief example. Make your final position more decisive about whether the situation is positive or negative overall.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a coherent overall arrangement: the first paragraph gives reasons for homeownership, the second introduces disadvantages, and the final paragraph states your view. Transitions such as “On the other hand” and “From my point of view” help signal these shifts. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes uneven, and some links between ideas are unclear. For instance, “As it has been shown the most reliable source of generational wealth” is detached from the preceding sentence, while the final paragraph moves quickly from affordability to social pressure and wellbeing. Use clearer sentence connections and develop one point before moving to the next. More precise referencing would also help readers follow who “they,” “one,” and “oneself” refer to.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You attempt a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “financial stability,” “passive source of income,” “generational wealth,” “mortgage,” and “psychological issues.” These choices show an effort to discuss both economic and personal consequences. However, noticeable spelling and word-choice errors sometimes make the meaning less clear, as in “Priotrizing,” “perseverance,” “desparate,” and “menatal.” Some combinations are also unnatural or imprecise: “the house owned by oneself,” “wrong means,” and “drain their will power” do not express the ideas as naturally as they could. Aim for accurate, conventional collocations and check spelling carefully. Replacing vague wording with precise terms—for example, specifying financial or social pressure—would make your argument clearer and more fluent.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a conditional structure in “if one can afford their own … they should buy” and a contrast introduced by “Despite.” This shows some range, but control is inconsistent, and errors in sentence construction and agreement sometimes make the reader work to understand the point. Examples include “Having own home give,” “It make people,” and “as a huge amount require,” where subjects and verbs do not agree or required grammatical elements are missing. The sentence beginning “As it has been shown” is also incomplete as written. Practise building accurate clauses with clear subjects and verbs, and check articles, agreement, and punctuation. More reliable control of these patterns would allow your complex ideas to come across clearly.
