IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 7.0)
In several nations, citizens prefer owning a home rather than renting as people develop a sense of financial security by acquisition of land/appartment, whereas many argue that owning a home becomes a liability and renting is safer and cheaper alternative. In my opinion, owning a home is a better choice as it provides financial stabitilty and mental assurance that does not have a price tag attached to it.
On the one hand, many experts provide calculations on how renting is a cheaper and financially a viable choice. Renting provides flexibility to the tenants as well as their funds. They have the freedom to move to another home equipped with better facilities and environment. However, tenants are not able to resonate to the feeling of belongingness to a place and establish financial stability.
On the other hand, early home owners create an asset that gives them financial security. People owning more than two home also enjoy a monetary adavantage of rental income. A number of population uses home loan, which enable circulation of money through the economy. The primary justification in owning a home is people develop a sense of stability that provides them a pyscological assurance and achieve financial freedom. In my opinion, achieving freedom from financial obligations carry greater importance than having flexibility. Hence, owning a home is rather important than renting one.
To conclude, renting a home is a better option in terms of money and flexibility; however, it cannot provide the statisfaction of financial freedom and indepency. Therefore, it is extremely important to own a home as it becomes a tool to achieve financial freedom and indepence.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, identifying reasons for the importance of home ownership and clearly stating a position that it is a positive situation. The ideas are relevant, such as financial security and psychological assurance. However, the development is somewhat limited; for instance, the point about 'circulation of money' is mentioned but not fully explained or linked back to the main argument effectively. The conclusion reiterates the position well, but the overall depth of the arguments could be improved by providing more specific examples or nuanced analysis to reach a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two sides of the argument. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'However' are used to guide the reader. While the progression is generally clear, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For example, the link between the idea of 'home loans' and 'psychological assurance' in the third paragraph is a bit abrupt.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task. You have used some topic-specific terms like 'financial security', 'liability', 'monetary advantage', and 'financial obligations'. However, there are some spelling errors ('stabitilty', 'pyscological', 'indepency', 'statisfaction') and minor collocation issues, such as 'resonate to the feeling of belongingness' (should be 'resonate with') and 'A number of population' (should be 'A portion of the population'). These errors do not impede communication but prevent a higher score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical slips, such as 'owning a home is rather important than renting one' (should be 'more important'), 'achieving freedom... carry greater importance' (subject-verb agreement error: 'carries'), and 'A number of population uses' (should be 'use'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not cause significant difficulty for the reader. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and ensuring comparative structures are used correctly.
