IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.5)

In some part of the word having a personal house is more necessary than letting a home.

this easy will contain all the point needed.

Having a house of your own is better instead of renting an apartment in some cases. Owning a house is better if it is in a city where you plan to stay for so many years because if you keep on renting a home for a long period of time you end up spending a lot of money which might be enough to buy a home. For example, one of my uncles who moved to a new city for work refused to buy a house instead rented an apartment and after some years of staying there he calculated the money he had spent on renting a house and found out he has spent so much money which was worth the price of a new house.

Another reason why i think acquiring a house is important is for comfort and freedom. However when you have a personal home, you will be free and more relaxed unlike when you are being too careful so you don't violate any law which always comes with punishment. For instance, when i was leaving in a rented space, you do not have the right to stay out after 10:pm if not you will end up paying fine or you will not be allowed to go inside your house.

In contrast, purchasing a home is also a nice option when you don't have enough money to get a new home for yourself and when you do not plan to stay there for a long period of time . Buying a house is seen as a waste of money when you just staying for a while. For example getting a house of 4 million while you can just rend a house for 200 thousand and end up looking for how to sell it after using it.

In conclusion, buying a house is important for long term goal or comfort leaving.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for home ownership and an opinion on whether it is positive or negative. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. The argument regarding financial benefits is clear, but the second point about 'freedom' is supported by a rather extreme and unrealistic example (a 10:00 PM curfew in a rented home). The third paragraph, which discusses renting as a positive, is slightly confusing as it contradicts the earlier stance without clearly framing it as a counter-argument. To reach a higher band, ensure that each paragraph focuses on a distinct, well-reasoned point that directly supports your overall position.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or misused. For example, the transition 'In contrast' in the third paragraph is used to introduce a point about renting, but the connection to the previous argument is weak. Additionally, the opening sentences are disjointed and contain errors ('this easy will contain...'). While there is a logical flow, the progression between ideas could be smoother. Improving the use of linking words such as 'furthermore,' 'consequently,' or 'on the other hand' would help connect your arguments more effectively.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the range and precision required for a higher band. There are several instances of awkward phrasing, such as 'personal house' instead of 'home ownership' and 'letting a home' instead of 'renting.' Some word choices are repetitive, and there are minor errors in collocation, such as 'comfort leaving.' To improve, try to incorporate more topic-specific vocabulary related to real estate and finance, and focus on using words in their correct context to express your ideas more naturally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay relies heavily on simple sentence structures. While there are attempts at complex sentences, they often contain grammatical errors, such as 'when you are being too careful so you don't violate any law' or 'when you just staying for a while.' Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the placement of commas and the use of capital letters. Frequent errors in verb tense and subject-verb agreement, such as 'one of my uncles... found out he has spent,' slightly impede the flow of the text. Focusing on sentence variety and proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy will significantly improve your score.
