IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.5)
People usually prefer to own a home rather than rent it in some countries. They might visualize it as an asset. This could be beneficial because they don't have to pay every month and can renovate by their choice.
One major reason why individuals prioritize to own a house in some parts of the world is that they can see it as a long-term asset for them and their family. Many human beings who own a house usually give flexibility to their beloved ones to live without any pressure of rent and can provide a source of income in future. For instance, a family who owns a house was suffering from financial condition, so they take loan from bank in exchange of the property papers and invest in their business it causes them to become financially stable with that amount and grew its business again.
I think one should own a house as their feelings won't be disturbed and they can renovate or decorate it by themselves in the way they want. Because they don't have this level of flexibility in rented house as some holders strictly refuse them to make any changes in the house. For example, my cousin drills some walls to hang paintings and artwork in his room to keep motivated himself and praise himself, however, the landowner fines him to dent his property.
In conclusion, I strongly agree one should own a house for his and his family's future safety, and he feels flexibility with feelings and emotions.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for home ownership and the writer's opinion on whether it is a positive or negative situation. The ideas are relevant, such as financial security and personal autonomy. However, the development is somewhat limited. The example regarding the cousin is anecdotal and lacks the depth required for a higher band. While the position is clear, the arguments could be extended with more sophisticated reasoning regarding the economic or social implications of home ownership versus renting. The response meets the requirements but remains somewhat superficial in its analysis.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear central topic. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'For instance,' 'One major reason,' and 'In conclusion,' which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'he feels flexibility with feelings and emotions' in the conclusion, which lacks clarity. The referencing is generally clear, though the flow between sentences within paragraphs could be smoother to achieve a more natural progression of ideas. Overall, the structure is coherent and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'prioritize' and 'financially stable.' However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and awkward collocations, such as 'landowner fines him to dent his property' (should be 'landlord' and 'fines him for damaging') and 'keep motivated himself.' These errors do not impede communication but indicate a need for more precise control over word choice and collocation to reach a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb forms and prepositions, such as 'prioritize to own' (should be 'prioritize owning'), 'grew its business' (should be 'grow their business'), and 'he feels flexibility' (should be 'he enjoys flexibility'). Punctuation is generally functional, but the sentence structure is occasionally repetitive. The errors are noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding the writer's intent. More attention to subject-verb agreement and correct verb patterns is needed.
