IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

in many countries owning a home is very important than renting because it is very important in my point of view like in Pakistan the income of the people is very less they have only ability to buy their bread and butter for their families .they cant even afford the electricity bill within their salaries .

if someone dont have a money to buy a home, he will pay rent for the time when he will own his for family. its mean he have a burden of rent or other more expenses of life. in my opinion its very better to own a house in these type of country where the living cost is high and monthly income is low. this is very positive thing

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, as it is only 125 words long. Consequently, the ideas are significantly underdeveloped. While the student attempts to address both parts of the prompt—explaining why home ownership is important and expressing an opinion on whether it is positive or negative—the lack of length prevents a full development of these points. The arguments regarding financial strain in countries like Pakistan are relevant but remain superficial. To improve, the student must expand on their points with specific examples, counter-arguments, and a more structured essay format to reach the required length.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay lacks a clear paragraph structure, consisting of only two short paragraphs. There is a lack of logical progression between ideas, and the use of cohesive devices is very limited. Phrases like 'its mean' and 'in these type of country' are used in a way that does not effectively link sentences or ideas. The transition between the explanation of why home ownership is important and the personal opinion is abrupt. To improve, the student should use clear paragraphing (introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion) and a wider range of linking words such as 'furthermore', 'consequently', or 'in contrast' to guide the reader.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is basic and repetitive, which limits the ability to convey complex ideas. Phrases such as 'bread and butter' are idiomatic but used in a context that feels slightly informal for an academic task. There are also issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'income of the people is very less' (should be 'low') and 'its very better' (should be 'much better'). The range of vocabulary is insufficient to demonstrate the flexibility required for higher bands. Expanding the range of academic vocabulary and focusing on correct collocations will be essential for improvement.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede communication. There are issues with subject-verb agreement ('someone dont have'), article usage, and sentence structure. The essay relies almost entirely on simple sentences, with very few attempts at complex structures. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing capital letters and incorrect spacing. To improve, the student should focus on mastering basic sentence construction, including correct verb tenses and subject-verb agreement, before attempting more complex grammatical structures. Proofreading for basic errors is highly recommended.
