IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent years , buying a home instead of renting is very crucial for people . it has become an increasingly prevalent phenomenon. while some argues that this trend brings certain drawbacks, I firmly believe that it represents a largely positive development overall due to list of reasons .

Overall this happens ,because of many things .firstly when any person spends the time in renting a house or apartment with the passage of time he becomes disturbed . there is no mental or physical health of person while renting. however if he is paying his rent with time but this will effect the persons life. Thats why many people wants to get their own home .i am also in the support of this type of vision.because at your own home you have freedom to do but at renting a home this will never happen.

When looking towards its positive aspects we should also look in its negative aspects.it also contains some negative and it will results negative if this happens.some people thought that owning a home is very important for this purpose they start collecting money however it is good if it is doing in normal way ,but when it exceeds it will become bad situation. some people do crime to get money or gambling in order to get money ,although in this way it becomes negative.

owning a home is important and good but if you can , however if you do not have resources there is nothing bad in living in rent houses.this is the the main thing .

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: why home ownership is important and whether it is a positive or negative situation. However, the development of ideas is limited. The reasons provided for why ownership is important—such as 'mental or physical health'—are vague and lack specific explanation or examples. The discussion on the negative aspects is also underdeveloped, relying on generalizations about crime and gambling without clear logical links. To improve, you should focus on providing concrete examples and more detailed explanations for your arguments to ensure the reader fully understands your perspective.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into paragraphs, which is a positive step. However, the logical progression of ideas is often disjointed. Transitions between sentences are frequently missing or mechanical, such as the repetitive use of 'however' and 'some people'. The referencing is sometimes unclear, making it difficult to follow the flow of the argument. For instance, the transition between the benefits of home ownership and the potential negative financial behaviors lacks a smooth connection. Using a wider variety of cohesive devices, such as 'consequently', 'furthermore', or 'in contrast', would help improve the flow and clarity of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but remains quite basic and repetitive. You rely on simple phrases like 'very important', 'good', and 'bad', which limits your ability to express more nuanced ideas. There are also some issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'doing in normal way' or 'living in rent houses'. To reach a higher band, you should aim to incorporate more precise, topic-specific vocabulary related to housing, finance, and social trends. Expanding your range of synonyms and learning common collocations will significantly enhance the sophistication of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and some attempted complex structures, but there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that occasionally impede readability. Common issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'some argues'), missing articles, and incorrect sentence boundaries. For example, 'there is no mental or physical health of person while renting' is grammatically unclear. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with spaces missing before commas and periods. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction and proofreading for common errors like article usage and verb tense consistency before attempting more complex grammatical structures.
