IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 8.5)

In many countries, owning a home is considered a major life achievement, while renting is often viewed as a temporary arrangement. This preference is influenced by several social and economic factors. In my opinion, this is generally a positive development, although it may create some financial challenges for certain individuals.

One reason why people prefer to own a house is that it provides a sense of security and stability. Homeowners do not have to worry about landlords increasing the rent or asking them to move out. As a result, they can settle in one place, build stronger relationships with their neighbours, and provide a stable environment for their families. In addition, in many cultures, owning property is regarded as a symbol of financial success and social status, which encourages people to purchase homes whenever possible.

Another important reason is that buying a house is often considered a long-term investment. Property values usually increase over time, allowing homeowners to build wealth and financial security. Unlike rent payments, which provide no future financial return, mortgage payments gradually increase ownership of a valuable asset. Consequently, many people believe that purchasing a home is a wiser financial decision than renting.

I believe this trend is largely positive. Homeownership encourages people to take better care of their properties and contribute to the development of their local communities. Furthermore, owning a house can provide financial security in retirement because individuals no longer need to pay rent. However, people should avoid purchasing homes that they cannot afford, as excessive debt may cause financial stress and reduce their quality of life.

In conclusion, people value homeownership because it offers security, social recognition, and long-term financial benefits. Although buying a house may involve significant financial responsibilities, I believe that its advantages outweigh the disadvantages, making it a positive situation overall.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.5

The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt. You clearly explain why homeownership is important—citing security, social status, and investment potential—and provide a balanced view on whether it is a positive or negative situation. Your position is consistent throughout the essay. The ideas are well-developed and supported with logical reasoning, such as the comparison between rent payments and mortgage equity. To reach the highest band, you could further extend the discussion by briefly acknowledging the potential negative impact on social mobility or the burden of maintenance costs, which would add even more depth to your analysis.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is smooth. You use a variety of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'As a result,' 'In addition,' 'Consequently,' and 'Furthermore,' which help guide the reader through your arguments. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points. The flow is natural, and the relationship between ideas is always clear, making the text very easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for an academic task. Phrases like 'temporary arrangement,' 'long-term investment,' and 'financial security' are used accurately. You also show an ability to use topic-specific terminology such as 'mortgage payments' and 'valuable asset.' While the vocabulary is precise and natural, it is consistently functional rather than highly sophisticated. To achieve a higher band, you could incorporate more nuanced collocations or less common lexical items to demonstrate a wider range of vocabulary, though your current usage is entirely sufficient for clear communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.5

Your grammar is strong, with a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You use subordinate clauses effectively, for example, 'Unlike rent payments, which provide no future financial return...' and '...people should avoid purchasing homes that they cannot afford.' The punctuation is accurate, and there are no significant errors that impede communication. The majority of your sentences are error-free, showing good control over tense and subject-verb agreement. To improve further, you could experiment with more varied sentence beginnings or more complex grammatical structures, such as inversion or conditional forms, to showcase greater flexibility.
