IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Owning a home rather than renting one is essential for people in some countries. I believe that it is an overwhelmingly positive development because it promotes stability and indicate wealth.
The primary reason why this trend should be viewed as a positive development is that owning a house contributes to stability. This is because acquiring a house provides shelter to the family without wandering in different location. For instance, a person in the family is working hard to provide a shelter to his family which leads to stability in their house irrespective of the fear regarding searching a better house.
Another reason supporting this view is that people in some countries believe that owning a house represents wealth. This can be attributed to the fact owning a home requires significantly large amount of money. Owning such house contributes the status of the family in the society.
As a result, they work hard to own a house which leads to an overall development in the society. For instance, people in some countries such as India people prefer to extend their property as much as possible.
Admittedly, this development may cause certain challenges. A major reason behind it is people keep their house vacant if they are residing at another one, renting such house at a low rate provide shelter to the people who are seeking for a temporary resident. For instance, a family is about to shift abroad, renting their house to the individuals who are need is beneficial for both parties. Nevertheless, these causes are relatively minor compared with the long-term benefits.
In conclusion, despite few minor drawbacks, I firmly believe that this trend represents an overall positive development because it promotes stability and indicate wealth.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for the importance of home ownership and the writer's opinion on whether this is positive or negative. The position is clear throughout. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation of why home ownership represents wealth is a bit repetitive, and the example regarding India is brief. To reach a higher band, the arguments could be more thoroughly explored with more nuanced reasoning. The counter-argument is acknowledged, but the explanation of why it is a 'minor' drawback could be more robustly supported.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'The primary reason', 'Another reason', 'Admittedly', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing (e.g., 'renting such house' should be 'renting such houses'). Overall, the progression of ideas is clear, and the structure supports the reader's understanding of the argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'attributed to the fact' and 'residing'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'indicate wealth' (should be 'indicates wealth' or 'is an indicator of wealth') and 'provide shelter to the people who are seeking for a temporary resident' (should be 'temporary residence'). The range is sufficient but lacks the precision and sophistication required for a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'it... indicate wealth', 'owning such house contributes the status') and article usage. Some sentences are slightly awkward, such as 'without wandering in different location'. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. A greater focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy would be beneficial.
