IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 7.0)
In many countries owing a home is considered more valuable than living in a rented house. In a broader context, this is purely due to societal standards of a successful individual. This is causing silent harm to the people of the country. In my opinion, this is a complete wrong practice and should be changed in the coming future.
Furthermore, people in these countries usually buy homes in young ages to prove their worth and out of peer pressure. A person owing a house is considered to be financially privileged. The hassle of shifting every time the lease period is over is seen as a struggle. The other reason people nowadays, own a house is the simpler loan services. Some NBFC's would provide loan even if the applicant doesn't fully qualify. In this case they are more likely to lend the amount at higher interest rates.
Moreover, this situation is highly harmful for the people. Buying a house is seen as economical success which leads to emotional buying rather than mindful purchase. In countries like India, the first question parents ask to the groom before marrying their daughters is whether he owns a house or not. This majorly influences their decision. This kind of mentality forces people to buy house even when they are not financially capable. This is when they fall in debt traps. Eventually, this leads to stress, anxiety, depression and in some cases suicides.
To conclude, this is a situation of financial disaster and an economical suicide. People purchase house just to please other people. This not only increase debt but the stress that comes with it can be the cause of bigger disease. The society needs to evaluate its standards and promote more mindful investments than just buying a house.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, identifying reasons for the importance of home ownership and clearly stating a negative position. The ideas are relevant, particularly the social pressure and financial implications. However, the development is somewhat uneven; while the point about social status is well-supported, the discussion on loan services is a bit brief. The conclusion effectively summarizes the stance, though the argument could be strengthened by exploring the potential benefits of renting more explicitly to provide a more balanced perspective. Overall, the position is clear and maintained throughout the essay.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, such as social pressure or financial consequences. Cohesive devices like 'Furthermore', 'Moreover', and 'Eventually' are used to link ideas, although some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points. To improve, the student could vary the use of cohesive devices to create a more natural flow between sentences, as some connections feel a bit repetitive in their structure.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
The vocabulary is generally appropriate and sufficient for the task. The student uses some effective collocations like 'financially privileged', 'debt traps', and 'mindful investments'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'owing a home' (should be 'owning') and 'economical suicide' (should be 'economic'). While the range is adequate to convey the message clearly, the essay lacks a wider variety of sophisticated or less common lexical items that would elevate the score to a higher band. The word choice is functional but could be more precise in places.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'owing a home' instead of 'owning', 'in young ages' instead of 'at a young age', and 'increase debt' instead of 'increases debt'. Punctuation is generally correct, but there are occasional slips in subject-verb agreement and preposition usage. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Increasing the use of error-free complex sentences would help improve the overall grammatical profile.
