IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 8.5)

In many countries, owning a home is considered far more important than renting one. This preference is influenced by cultural, financial, and social factors. In my opinion, although this mindset has some drawbacks, it is generally a positive development because it provides people with greater stability and long-term financial security.

One of the main reasons people prefer to own a house is that it offers a sense of stability and permanence. Homeowners do not have to worry about landlords increasing rent or asking them to move out. As a result, families can settle in one place, allowing children to attend the same school and build lasting relationships within the community. In addition, in many cultures, owning a home is seen as a symbol of success and financial independence, which encourages people to invest in property rather than rent.

Another important reason is the financial benefits of home ownership. Property often increases in value over time, making it a valuable long-term investment. Instead of paying rent every month without gaining ownership, homeowners gradually build equity in their property. This asset can later be sold, rented out, or passed on to future generations, providing financial security for the family.

I believe that considering home ownership important is largely a positive situation. Firstly, it encourages people to save money and plan for the future instead of spending all their income on short-term expenses. Secondly, homeowners are generally more likely to take good care of their properties and contribute to the development of their neighbourhoods. This can create cleaner, safer, and more attractive communities.

However, there are some disadvantages. Purchasing a home often requires taking on a large mortgage, which can create financial pressure for many years. Moreover, homeowners may find it difficult to relocate for better job opportunities, reducing their flexibility in a rapidly changing job market.

In conclusion, although buying a home can involve financial risks and limit mobility, I believe that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. Home ownership provides security, financial growth, and a stronger sense of belonging, making it an overall positive trend.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.5

The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt. You clearly identify the reasons for the importance of home ownership (stability, financial investment, social status) and provide a balanced view by discussing both the positive aspects and the potential drawbacks (financial pressure, lack of mobility). Your position is clear from the introduction and is maintained consistently throughout the essay. The ideas are well-developed, with logical explanations provided for each point, such as the link between home ownership and community contribution. The structure is logical and follows a standard essay format, ensuring all requirements of the task are met effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between paragraphs is smooth. You make effective use of cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'Instead of', 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'However' to link ideas and sentences. The paragraphing is appropriate, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. The referencing is clear, and the flow of the argument is easy to follow throughout the text. There is no evidence of mechanical or repetitive use of linking words, demonstrating a high level of control over the structure of the essay.

Lexical Resource — Band 8.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for an academic essay. You use terms such as 'financial independence', 'build equity', 'long-term investment', and 'rapidly changing job market' accurately. The vocabulary is precise and contributes to the clarity of your arguments. While the range is sufficient and effective, it could be further enhanced by incorporating more sophisticated or idiomatic collocations to reach the highest band. However, the current usage is natural, and there are no errors in word choice or spelling that impede communication or cause confusion for the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.5

The essay displays a good variety of complex sentence structures, such as the use of conditional and concessive clauses (e.g., 'although this mindset has some drawbacks, it is generally a positive development'). The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation and grammar is strong. There are no significant errors that distract the reader or affect the meaning of your points. The use of modal verbs and passive voice where appropriate adds to the academic tone of the writing. Your grammatical accuracy is consistent throughout the entire response.
