IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 7.5)
In many countries owning a home is considered more significant than living in a rented house. In a broader context, this is purely due to societal standards of a successful individual. This is causing negative consequences to the people of the country. In my opinion, this is a completely wrong practice and should be changed in the coming future.
Furthermore, people in these countries usually buy homes at a young age to show financial stability and out of peer pressure. A person owning a house is considered to be financially privileged. The hassle of shifting every time the lease period is over is seen as a struggle. The other reason people nowadays, own a house is the simpler loan services. Some NBFCs would provide loans even if the applicant doesn't fully qualify. In this case they are more likely to lend the amount at higher interest rates.
Moreover, this situation is highly harmful for the people. Buying a house is seen as economic success which leads to emotional buying rather than a carefully planned purchase. In countries like India, the first question parents ask to the groom before marrying their daughters is whether he owns a house or not. This majorly influences their decision. This kind of mentality forces people to buy a house even when they are not financially capable. This is when they fall into debt traps. Eventually, this leads to stress, anxiety, depression and in some cases suicides.
To conclude, this is a situation of financial disaster. People purchase house just to please other people. This not only increases debt but the stress that comes with it can be the cause of serious health problems. The society needs to evaluate its standards and promote more mindful investments than just buying a house.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: explaining why home ownership is important and evaluating whether this is a positive or negative situation. You clearly state your position in the introduction and maintain it throughout. The ideas, such as societal pressure and financial instability, are relevant and well-supported with examples like the Indian marriage context. To reach a higher band, ensure that the explanation of 'why' is slightly more balanced or nuanced, as the current focus leans heavily on the negative aspects. Overall, the task is fully addressed with a clear, consistent argument.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, such as the reasons for buying a home and the subsequent negative consequences. You use cohesive devices like 'Furthermore', 'Moreover', and 'To conclude' to transition between ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For instance, the link between 'NBFCs' and the following sentence could be more tightly connected. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your ideas with precision. Phrases like 'societal standards', 'financial stability', 'peer pressure', and 'debt traps' are used effectively. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'emotional buying' (which could be 'impulse buying') and 'in the coming future' (which is slightly redundant). While you use some less common items, the range is not yet wide enough to consistently demonstrate sophisticated control. However, the vocabulary is appropriate for the task and does not impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'The other reason people nowadays, own a house is...' (unnecessary comma) and 'In the coming future' (awkward phrasing). Additionally, 'The society needs to evaluate its standards' is a bit simplistic. While there are errors, they are generally minor and do not impede the reader's understanding. To improve, try to incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as conditional sentences or passive voice, with greater accuracy to demonstrate higher control.
