IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 7.5)

In many countries owning a home is considered as a sign of stability than living in a rented house. There are various reasons for this belief. Some consider it as an investment and some a symbol of financial success. This can sometimes cause a negative consequence on the general public. In my opinion, the societal pressure should be eliminated in the coming future.

Furthermore, people in these countries usually buy homes to demonstrate their financial stability and out of peer pressure. A house is seen as a financial security and an asset. A person owning a house is considered to be financially privileged. Living in a rented house is seen as a sign of weakness and instability. The other factor contributing towards this is the easier loan process. Some NBFCs would provide loans even if the applicant doesn't fully qualify. In this case they are more likely to lend the amount at higher interest rates.

Moreover, this situation is highly harmful for the people. Buying a house is seen as economic success which leads to emotional buying rather than a carefully planned purchase. In some parts of India, for a marriage proposal the grooms financial stability and security is judged by whether or not he owns a house. This kind of mentality forces people to buy a house even when they are not financially capable. This is when they fall into debt traps. Eventually, this leads to stress, anxiety, depression and in some cases suicides.

To conclude, a house can be a good asset if carefully financed. However, this can be a situation of financial disaster if people purchase a house for social recognition. This not only increases debt but the stress that comes with it can be the cause of serious health problems. The society needs to evaluate its standards and promote more mindful investments than just buying a house.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have addressed all parts of the prompt: you explained why home ownership is important and provided a clear opinion on whether this is positive or negative. Your position is consistent throughout the essay. The ideas are relevant, particularly the discussion on social pressure and financial risk. To reach a higher band, ensure that your arguments are more fully extended. For instance, while you mention the 'easier loan process' as a factor, you could elaborate on how this specifically drives the cultural shift toward ownership. Overall, the response is well-focused and directly answers the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, such as the reasons for ownership and the negative consequences. You use cohesive devices like 'Furthermore', 'Moreover', and 'To conclude' effectively to guide the reader. However, some transitions between sentences within paragraphs could be more fluid to avoid a slightly mechanical feel. For example, the link between the 'easier loan process' and the 'negative consequences' could be bridged more smoothly. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. Phrases like 'financial privilege', 'debt traps', and 'mindful investments' are used correctly and add sophistication to your writing. There are occasional minor issues with word choice, such as 'negative consequence on' (usually 'negative consequence for') and 'grooms financial stability' (missing an apostrophe). You successfully use topic-specific vocabulary related to finance and social issues, which helps convey your ideas clearly. Expanding your range of collocations would help you reach a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'considered as a sign' (should be 'considered a sign') and 'the grooms financial stability' (should be 'the groom's'). Additionally, 'in the coming future' is slightly redundant. Despite these errors, your meaning is always clear, and the errors do not impede communication. To improve, focus on punctuation, specifically possessive apostrophes, and ensure consistent subject-verb agreement. Your control of complex sentences is developing well.
