IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

according to my opinion owning a home vary coutry by country

in some country this is very better decision and in some country this is very worst

in Pakistan the home price is bearable for most of the citizens and rental homes are very less but the rental burden is very high on the salaried person. he have a extra burden on his shoulder. this can be reduce to buy a home .government offers a lots of policies to buy a house according to need. i think so dont have a home in these type of country is a worst decision . i will not recommend this in developing countries where the living cost is very high and homes prices are controlled . rich people can own a very big houses very easily. they make a farm houses and villas for their families. they enjoy alot while living. and the country like Hongkong where people cant afford home and this is going to become a very severe problem for the government to provide the basic living of life. people have to pay a heavy rent for very little studio rooms

and in Dubai we have great business opportunity and the living cost is very high . its very difficult to buy a home their because of high cost, so while doing job their its very easy to pay rent for the house instead of buying it. same in other Gulf countries the house are too costly and people can pay their rent very easily. I will prefer to rent a home in these kind of countries.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for the importance of home ownership and an opinion on whether this is positive or negative. However, the development is uneven. The discussion on Pakistan is somewhat clear, but the transition to Hong Kong and Dubai lacks a cohesive argument linking back to the 'positive or negative' aspect of the prompt. The position is present but could be more clearly articulated throughout the essay. Some ideas are under-developed, particularly the distinction between different economic contexts, which remains superficial. To improve, ensure each paragraph directly supports your central argument with more detailed reasoning.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay lacks a clear structure. It is written as a single block of text without paragraph breaks, which makes it difficult for the reader to follow the progression of ideas. There is a lack of cohesive devices; sentences are often linked by simple conjunctions or start abruptly. While there is a logical attempt to move from one country to another, the lack of paragraphing and limited use of linking words (e.g., 'furthermore', 'consequently', 'in contrast') significantly hinders the flow. Improving the use of transition signals and organizing the response into clear paragraphs is essential for a higher score.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is limited and repetitive. Phrases like 'very better', 'very worst', and 'very high' are used repeatedly, indicating a lack of range. There are also several word-choice errors, such as 'bearable' instead of 'affordable' and 'dont have a home' instead of 'not owning a home'. While the meaning is generally conveyed, the lack of precision and the reliance on basic, informal language prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. To improve, focus on learning collocations and more academic synonyms for common adjectives.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede readability. There are consistent issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'the home price is', 'he have a extra burden'), article usage (e.g., 'a extra', 'the country like Hongkong'), and sentence structure. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing commas and incorrect capitalization. The range of structures is limited, consisting mostly of simple sentences. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, subject-verb agreement, and the correct use of articles before attempting more complex grammatical structures.
