IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Rather than renting home in a few nations, buying it considers vital. It is due to certain reasons, and this essay will discuss whether it is a positive or negative situation.

To start with, stability is one of the major reasons behind it. When people purchase a home with a fixed-rate mortgage, their monthly repayments generally remain same for many years, whereas rental costs tend to increase over time due to inflation. Moreover, it offers financial security. People those are having their own houses, are more likely to secure financially than those who continue paying higher rent without gaining ownership of the property. Therefore, homeownership not only offers greater financial stability but also serves as a valuable long-term investment.

I consider it as a positive development as it provides freedom to renovate and personalized living spaces as per homeowners' requirements. Unlike tenants, they do not need to seek permission from a landlord before making any changes such as repainting the walls or creating a garden. Moreover, Greater security for children and families is another positive outcome. In this way, it allows them to stay at the same place without changing schools more frequently; hence, children feel secure, happy, and able to build long-term friendships with others. Similarly, families feel attached to the neighborhood without the worry of losing it. Thus, there is no need to move more often because of rent increases or lease endings.

To conclude, financial stability and security could be the reason behind it, and due to family happiness and more personal freedom, it is a positive change.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: explaining why homeownership is important and providing a clear opinion on whether it is a positive or negative situation. The ideas regarding financial stability, investment potential, and personal freedom are relevant and well-supported. However, the development is somewhat brief. While the arguments are clear, they could be further extended with more specific examples or deeper analysis to reach a higher band. The position is consistent throughout the essay, meeting the requirements for a Band 6.5 or 7.0, but the brevity of the conclusion and the limited depth of the body paragraphs suggest a solid Band 6.5 level.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the reasons for homeownership from the evaluation of the situation. Cohesive devices such as 'To start with', 'Moreover', 'Unlike', and 'To conclude' are used effectively to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing in sentences like 'People those are having their own houses' is a bit clunky, which slightly disrupts the flow. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task. You use some good topic-specific terms like 'fixed-rate mortgage', 'inflation', and 'long-term investment'. However, there are some awkward phrasings and word choice errors, such as 'buying it considers vital' (should be 'is considered vital') and 'secure financially' (should be 'financially secure'). These errors do not impede communication but prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. To improve, focus on more precise collocations and ensure that word forms are used correctly in context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'People those are having their own houses' (should be 'People who have their own houses') and 'remain same' (should be 'remain the same'). There are also minor issues with article usage and sentence construction. While you demonstrate an attempt at complex structures, the frequency of these errors suggests a Band 6.0 level, as the errors are noticeable but do not cause significant difficulty for the reader.
