IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Whether people should own a home or rend one is often widely debated. In some countries, it has been a trend for people to be an owner rather than a tenant. There are several factors that contribute to this phenomenon, such as privacy, emotional attachment, and asset management. Although the cost of buying a home might be relatively expensive, I consider that it is a positive situation.

One of the biggest differences between having your own home and renting one is the privacy concern. Periodically, owners will visit the home and check the status of appliances. It makes tenants feel their space get impeded and unprotected. Therefore, people tend to struggle to find sense of belong when they rent a home since the home doesn't not belong to them. They can not organize or decorate the space in a particular way to make themselves feel attached. In addition to a space for living, owning a home has nowadays been considered as a measure of investment. As the global economic continues developing, there is a strong tendency for the house price to remain going upward. When an individual buys houses, they server as products that increase their value as time progresses and thus increase individuals total wealth.

Although it might be challenging for people to afford buying a home at their early age, I consider that it is a positive situation that people become aware of the advantages of owning a home rather than renting one, and thus tend to prefer that over the latter. From an individual's perspective, it serves as an ultimate goal to reach and provides more motivation for an individual to work hard. On the society level, this phenomenon promotes the continuous development of building houses and thus creates more jobs for people.

Overall, the tendency for people to own a home instead of being a tenant is likely to caused by privacy concern, sense of belonging, and long-term investment. This situation is beneficial to both individual and society-wise growth.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The essay addresses all parts of the prompt, identifying reasons for home ownership (privacy, emotional attachment, investment) and clearly stating a position that it is a positive situation. The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed. However, the development of the 'positive' aspect could be more nuanced; while you mention individual motivation and societal job creation, the argument could be strengthened by acknowledging potential downsides (like financial burden) to provide a more balanced perspective, which is often expected at higher bands. Overall, the response is focused and maintains a clear position throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, such as privacy or investment. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'In addition to', 'Therefore', and 'Although', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing, such as 'this phenomenon' being used repeatedly. Paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas is generally smooth, though the link between the individual's motivation and the societal benefit in the third paragraph could be more explicitly connected.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with some precision, using terms like 'asset management', 'global economic', and 'total wealth'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'the global economic continues developing' (should be 'economy') and 'likely to caused by' (should be 'likely caused by'). While you attempt some less common vocabulary, there are occasional inaccuracies that slightly hinder the natural flow. To reach a higher band, focus on more precise collocations and ensure word forms are used correctly in context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You show control over complex sentences, such as 'Although it might be challenging for people to afford buying a home at their early age, I consider that it is a positive situation'. However, there are several grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('the global economic continues') and minor slips like 'they server as products' (should be 'serve') and 'individuals total wealth' (missing apostrophe). These errors do not impede communication, but they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for small errors would improve your accuracy.
