IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Owning a home in some countries has become significant for citizens because it can be a long term investment for them. I believe that it is negative developement because it can impact them financially.

To commence with, buying own house can help them to save money. This is because many people can not save money that they earn due to their habit of overspending. If the state force them to buy own home then they can make savings that they can utilize after their retirement. For example, young people often prefer to buy expensive mobile phones and cars for social status. As a result, they some times suffer financial crisis. Therefore, if they spend that money on buying house then they can use that money in the future.

Initially, purchasing own home can impact one's economic condition. This happens some people can suffer financially due to lower income if they forced to buy house, which can lead them towards mental and physcial issues such as depression. For instance, many middle class people when try to own house because of low salaries, they have to take loans from banks which can some time leads them towards bankruptcy. Hence, owing a home for some people can be challenging because of personal and professional reasons such as lack of finanical aid.

In conclusion, there is no doubt that owning a home can be investment for the future that one can use in diffcult situation, nevertheless, it can compel individauls suffer not only mentally and physcially but also financially.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for the importance of home ownership and an opinion on whether this is positive or negative. However, the development of ideas is somewhat inconsistent. The first body paragraph argues that home ownership is a form of forced saving, which is a relevant point, but the logic is slightly flawed as it assumes the state forces individuals to buy homes. The second paragraph discusses the negative financial impact, which is well-linked to the prompt. To reach a higher band, the arguments need more nuanced development and a clearer connection between the 'reasons' and the 'opinion' sections. The position is clear throughout the essay.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear central topic. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'To commence with', 'For example', and 'In conclusion', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are mechanical or slightly awkward, such as the use of 'Initially' to start the second body paragraph, which does not logically follow the first point. Referencing is generally clear, but the flow between sentences could be improved to create a more natural progression of ideas. The paragraphing is appropriate for the task.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'bankruptcy' and 'financial crisis'. However, there are several spelling errors ('developement', 'physcial', 'finanical', 'individauls', 'diffcult') and some awkward collocations ('buying own house' instead of 'buying one's own house'). While these errors do not impede communication, they limit the score. A wider range of precise vocabulary would be needed to move into the higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('buy own home'), subject-verb agreement ('if the state force them'), and preposition usage. Some sentences are slightly clunky, such as 'this happens some people can suffer', which lacks a necessary conjunction or relative pronoun. While the meaning remains clear, the frequency of these errors suggests a lack of control over more complex structures. Improving accuracy in basic grammar and sentence construction is essential for a higher score.
