IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is an urgent for every person to have a place where he can relax and have the liberty to do whatever he wish for and there can be no other place than home for that. Three are different trend around the world to fulfill this desire as some rent them and other prefer to own the houses. In my point of view, i always go for getting the property myself rather than renting. There may effect differently which i will discuss further in this essay.

Firstly, owning a home can be very pleasing as you don't have to bother for rent and having a property can increase the social status of the person. For example mostly the rich persons in the world own expensive and luxury homes around the world. The countries which developed have more trend to have owning the homes as they have resources and purchasing power to do so.

On the other hand, in under developed countries where GDP is low everyone can not have the luxury to buy the house so most of the people go for rent. In countries where most people have jobs rather than businesses or who have fixed monthly income found themselves easy to pay the rent.

Both the situations have their pros and cons as i think if in any country most people have their own house there will be huge class difference but on contrary the satisfaction level of that country will be high. A country where renting a house is in trend could ease the public and it can also contribute to the national economy by its masses.

In conclusion, there are certain positive and negative aspects of both the situations but i think balance between them can more beneficial for over all society.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for the importance of home ownership and an opinion on whether this is positive or negative. However, the development of ideas is somewhat superficial. For instance, the link between 'social status' and 'rich persons' is mentioned but not fully explored in the context of why it is 'important' for the average person. The argument regarding the 'national economy' in the final paragraph is also vague and lacks specific supporting evidence. To reach a higher band, you should provide more concrete examples or logical explanations for your claims, ensuring that the connection between your points and the prompt is explicit throughout the essay.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' to signal transitions. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the use of referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the phrase 'There may effect differently'. The progression of ideas is generally easy to follow, but the lack of more sophisticated linking words or varied cohesive devices limits the coherence. Improving the variety of your transition signals and ensuring that each sentence flows naturally into the next would enhance the overall structure.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the precision and range required for higher bands. You rely on somewhat repetitive or simplistic phrasing, such as 'have the luxury' and 'in trend'. There are also minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'There are different trend' (should be 'trends') and 'the countries which developed' (should be 'developed countries'). To improve, focus on using more academic collocations and precise terminology related to economics and housing, while ensuring that your word forms are accurate in context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include 'It is an urgent for every person' (should be 'It is urgent'), 'he wish for' (should be 'he wishes for'), and 'everyone can not have' (should be 'not everyone can have'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the use of commas. To improve, you should focus on subject-verb agreement, correct article usage, and refining your control over complex sentence structures to ensure they are error-free.
