IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 7.0)
In many countries people prefer to buy their own houses instead of living in a rented house or apartment. The reason for this is that many individuals want to spend the life after retirement peacefully, without being worried about rent. In my opinion, this is definitely a positive development as it is more practical to buy a house on monthly installments instead of paying monthly rent.
Many people spend their whole lives in earning money to pay bills and rents. After retirement, it may become difficult for many individuals to afford these expenses. As a result, the majority of individuals want to buy their own houses before retirement, so that they are not required to pay rent and can use their savings to fulfill other needs along with enjoying their lives. For instance, an increasing number of people are investing their money in buying homes in their 30s, so that they can own a house in 60s.
Nowadays, it is way easier to secure a house loan in many countries, and the citizens can buy a house with monthly installments and a down payment. Availability of such loans makes it very convenient for people to purchase an apartment or a house. Hence, people prefer to pay EMIs, rather than paying monthly rent. In that way, end of the term, they will have their own place, which is an asset. Moreover, people are building their legacy for the next generations, who can use the property as an asset. For instance, they can get another loan on their house and invest somewhere else.
To conclude, the reason behind this phenomenon is that people are building a place for a secure future and in my opinion, this is positive situation as house is useful asset for individuals and their next generation s.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, providing reasons for the importance of home ownership and clearly stating a position that it is a positive development. The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed. For instance, the explanation regarding financial security in retirement and the concept of building an asset for future generations is logical and supports the main argument effectively. While the development is clear, some points could be further extended with more specific examples or nuanced analysis to reach a higher band, but the current level of detail is sufficient to fully address the task requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, such as financial planning for retirement in the second paragraph and the mechanics of loans and asset building in the third. Cohesive devices like 'For instance', 'Hence', and 'Moreover' are used effectively to link ideas. The progression of arguments is smooth, and the paragraphing is appropriate. There is a slight reliance on simple transition words, but the overall flow is coherent and easy to follow throughout the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task and allows for clear communication. You use some topic-specific terminology such as 'monthly installments', 'down payment', 'EMIs', and 'asset'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a tendency to repeat words like 'individuals' and 'people'. To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated synonyms or collocations related to finance and housing. For example, instead of 'way easier', using 'significantly more accessible' would demonstrate a higher level of lexical control and precision.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is generally good control over grammar, and errors are infrequent and do not impede communication. For example, 'In that way, end of the term, they will have their own place' contains a minor prepositional error ('at the end of the term'), but the meaning remains clear. You use complex sentences effectively to explain cause and effect. To reach a higher band, focus on increasing the variety of complex structures and ensuring consistent accuracy in articles and prepositions.
