IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.5)

In many countries, owning a home rather than renting one is very crucial for individuals. Currently, it is better to buy your own accommodation. This is mainly because people want financial security and a stable place to live. I believe this is a positive development for both individuals and society.

To begin with, owning your home provides financial security. Acquiring an accommodation is help to not pay rent every month. It's a long-term investment to buy a residence. Your family can live peacefully in their own home. Your children can grow up easily in a simple and peaceful environment. Owning a home provides a lot of respect from individuals such as your relatives and cousins. For example, if your house is rented, your relatives do not respect your children. Hence, owning a residence is a flex in this era.

On the other hand, owning a home provides the tension of paying rent. Given the fact that research shows that tension destroys the home environment and effect children behaviour. So, owning a home is a blessing from God. Moreover, purchasing a home is a good investment for your children's future. The property value increases day by day. In addition, acquiring your own home gives you the freedom to renovate your residence according to your lifestyle. It's beneficial to your children after you. Your children can renovate your home in their style. I argue that owning a home is a need for individuals to have peaceful living. Owning a residence describes your character and lifestyle. Also takes respect from everyone.

In essence, I believe that it's a positive impact to buy your own home as compared to a rented one. Owning your home provides unlimited access as compared to renting. Renting individuals renovate their residence according to the landlord's rules. So it's important to acquire accommodation nowadays.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for the importance of home ownership and the writer's opinion on whether this is positive. However, the development of ideas is somewhat superficial. For instance, the claim that 'relatives do not respect your children' if you rent is an illogical and unsupported argument that detracts from the quality of the response. While the position is clear throughout, the supporting arguments, such as 'owning a home is a blessing from God', lack the analytical depth required for a higher band. To improve, focus on providing more logical, evidence-based arguments rather than subjective or anecdotal claims.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into paragraphs, and there is a clear attempt to use cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'On the other hand', and 'In essence'. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical or repetitive. For example, the transition between the benefits of renovation and the conclusion is abrupt. Additionally, some referencing is unclear, such as the pronoun usage in the second paragraph. While the overall progression is logical, the lack of sophisticated linking words and the occasional awkward transition limit the score to a 6.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and range expected at higher levels. There is some repetition of basic terms like 'owning a home', 'residence', and 'accommodation'. Some word choices are unnatural or imprecise, such as 'owning a residence is a flex' (slang) and 'tension destroys the home environment'. While the meaning is generally clear, the range of vocabulary is limited, and there is little evidence of less common lexical items or idiomatic collocations used with accuracy. Expanding your vocabulary to include more academic and topic-specific terms would be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow. Examples include 'Acquiring an accommodation is help to not pay rent' (incorrect verb form), 'effect children behaviour' (incorrect word form/spelling), and 'It's a positive impact to buy your own home' (inaccurate collocation). While the meaning is usually understandable, the frequency of these errors prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. Focus on subject-verb agreement, correct preposition usage, and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed accurately.
