IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 7.0)
In many nations, owning a home is considered as a pride status among society and it is looked as a very vital asset in life. That is why people prefers to buy a house instead of renting one. I think it is a positive situation.
To begin with, renting an apartment is seen as unstable and unpredictable way of living. Landlords have the full authority of that apartment or house and tenants are always feeling insecure regarding their future. Owning a property gives people a sense of secure life ahead and a shelter which they can call theirs. For example, most of the recent cases are seen in which landlord ordered the tenants to empty the property without any advance notice and took advantage of the helpless people. That is one of the reasons that people struggles hard to achieve a home.
In addition, house is very crucial in terms of investment and money making asset. Property prices are skyrocketed considerably in the recent decades. In which people now are keen to purchase houses. Owning a home is not only a method of making money and securing future but it gives a sense of pride and a higher status in the modern society. For instance, it is observed that a person who own a good property or a private home is respected more and considered as a higher middle class categories. That is also the highlighted reason.
In summary, renting or owning a home is a subjective ideology among dwellers. However, the trend of purchasing personal property for shelter has great significance among new generation, socially as well as personally. So, i thing it is a positive situation.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: explaining why home ownership is important and expressing a clear opinion on whether this is positive or negative. The ideas are relevant, focusing on security and investment potential. However, the development is somewhat repetitive, particularly regarding the 'pride' and 'status' aspects mentioned in both the introduction and the second body paragraph. To reach a higher band, the arguments could be more nuanced, perhaps by briefly acknowledging the counter-argument of the flexibility of renting before reinforcing the chosen position. Overall, the position is consistent throughout the essay.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a central theme. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'In addition', and 'In summary' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally imprecise, such as the phrase 'That is also the highlighted reason' at the end of the second body paragraph, which feels disconnected. The flow between sentences is generally smooth, but the internal structure of some paragraphs could be tightened to improve the overall progression of ideas.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'unpredictable', 'authority', and 'subjective ideology'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'pride status' (should be 'status symbol' or 'source of pride') and 'skyrocketed considerably' (skyrocketed already implies a significant increase). Additionally, 'higher middle class categories' is slightly awkward. The range is sufficient to convey meaning, but more precise and natural collocations would elevate the score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('people prefers', 'person who own'), article misuse ('a house' vs 'house'), and awkward phrasing ('looked as a very vital asset'). Punctuation is generally correct, but there are minor slips throughout. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher band score. Increasing the variety of complex structures while ensuring subject-verb agreement and correct article usage would improve the accuracy significantly.
