IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.5)

,In many countries home ownership is regarded as a great achievement. While renting offers greater flexibility , many people prefer to own a house because it provides financial security and social status. In my opinion it is a positive trend so that people do not have take on financial burden.

To begin with , owning a home is highly valued as it offers a long term security. Home owners do not have to worry about increasing rents or being asked to leave by landlords. this is particularly important for families with children as it allows them to remain in same community and schools for years .Another

important benefit is the property ownership as compared to renting which is a regular expense with no lasting return or gradually building ownership. In many countries, the property rises over time so it will help enabling the financial future. More over houses can be passed on to future generations.

On the other hand, purchasing a home can also create financial pressure. Some people may borrow money for building or owning a property or house which will also lead them to financial stress and lack of financial freedom.

To conclude, people prefer owning a home as it offers stability, financial security and social recognition.

Although it involves financial commitment but i think it is a positive

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for the importance of home ownership and your opinion on whether it is positive or negative. However, the essay is significantly under the 250-word minimum, which limits the depth of your arguments. While you mention financial security and social status, these points are not fully developed. The conclusion is also incomplete, cutting off mid-sentence, which prevents a clear summary of your position. To improve, you must expand on your ideas with more specific examples or explanations and ensure the essay meets the required length to allow for a comprehensive discussion of the topic.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into paragraphs, and there is a logical progression of ideas. You use some cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Another important benefit', and 'On the other hand' to signal shifts in your argument. However, the use of these devices is somewhat mechanical. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear, and the abrupt ending of the essay negatively impacts the overall flow and coherence of the piece. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that your paragraphs are balanced and fully concluded.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'financial security', 'social status', and 'long term security'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'help enabling the financial future' and 'property ownership as compared to renting which is a regular expense'. The vocabulary is generally functional but lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. To improve, try to incorporate more topic-specific collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing. Expanding your range of synonyms will also help you express your ideas with greater clarity and impact.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'people do not have take on', 'the property rises over time', and 'Although it involves financial commitment but i think'. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with unnecessary spaces before commas. These errors do not completely impede communication, but they are frequent enough to affect the overall quality. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement, correct preposition usage, and proofreading for minor slips in sentence construction.
