IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Nowadays, more and more people live in a rental house rather than their own. It is argued by some sectors of society that living in a rental house is better then owning one, while other argue that this is not a positive trend. Both aspects have their own importance and benefits., but ultimately, I acknowledge that the former approach is far better and more practical.
As a matter of fact, people currently do not like to own a house, they treat it as a liability, in fact they like to live in a rental because they acknowledge that this approach is far more practical due to some reason. For instance, if we are a dweller in a rental apartment we would be able to bypass most of the taxes which the government collect from land owners, we do not have to pay the property tax, social security tax, maintenance duties and so on, while we use the land of other person, we live and relish the facilities, while the owner has to pay all the tax and duties.
Another, contemporary argument is that it is very beneficial in terms of finance. According to the billionaires: the less you the more richer your are. This is considered as the golden rule of finance. For instance, in countries like the United States the rents are very high and people rent out their own house and live in a small apartment because living in their own house might be expensive for them, also the rent money could easily float them through duties and house expense.
In conclusion, despite the valid reasons placed by opponent regarding owning a house, I am still convinced that living in a rental apartment is more substantial and has overarching benefits

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: why home ownership is important and whether this is positive or negative. However, the development is somewhat uneven. While you provide reasons for renting (tax benefits and financial flexibility), the argument regarding why ownership is considered 'very important' in some countries is largely ignored. The essay focuses almost exclusively on the benefits of renting, which makes the response feel slightly unbalanced. To improve, ensure you explicitly address the cultural or social reasons why people value home ownership before presenting your counter-argument. Your position is clear, but the supporting ideas could be more thoroughly explored to reach a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, and there is a logical progression of ideas. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'For instance' and 'In conclusion', to link your points. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or repetitive. For example, the transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs could be smoother. Additionally, some sentences are slightly disjointed, such as the list of taxes in the second paragraph, which could be better integrated into a more complex sentence structure. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence would enhance the flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'liability', 'overarching', and 'substantial'. However, there are instances of awkward phrasing and word choice errors, such as 'the less you the more richer your are' and 'float them through duties'. These errors occasionally distract the reader, though they do not impede overall communication. To move to a higher band, focus on using collocations more accurately and incorporating more sophisticated, topic-specific vocabulary related to economics and housing markets, while ensuring that your idiomatic expressions are used correctly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement ('other argue', 'government collect') and punctuation. There are also issues with sentence fragments and run-on sentences, such as in the first paragraph where a comma splice occurs. While these errors rarely prevent the reader from understanding your meaning, they are frequent enough to limit the score. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy and ensuring that complex sentences are punctuated correctly.
