IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.5)

In some countries, people give more importance to owning a home instead of renting one. In my opinion, this is a negative situation due to the increasing population.

People prefer owning a house than renting one can be due to various reason, one can be sentimental value associated with having a home for their family or even to utilise their earnings in a efficient and most fruitful manner. In countries like India, people have a very a strong value associated with their homes as most people live with their parents or some even with extended families and providing a roof of their own above their families head gives them a sense of satisfaction which cannot be matched by anything else. For instance, a person who throughout their childhood or teenage has seen their parents struggle to earn a livelihood without thinking about their own dreams, can only think of supporting and providing care in their old age by living with their parents in the city they work. On the other hand, for some people owning a home rather than renting one is a financial decision as they will be spending a similar amount on renting throughout their lifetime.

In contrast, there are a good number of people who prefer renting a home instead of owning one as it requires a huge amount of money and most people even apply for a loan to pay for it. And due to the recent drastic rise in property prices, it's very hard for a common man to afford a home or repay the loan. This is the reason some people end up renting instead of buying a home.

In conclusion, demand for residential properties has increased due to the rise in population in various countries and with limited number of land mass available in every country this is a great concern for current and future generations.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed both parts of the prompt: explaining why home ownership is important and providing your opinion on whether this is positive or negative. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat uneven. While you provide good reasons for the importance of home ownership, your argument regarding why this is a 'negative situation' is underdeveloped. You mention population growth and land scarcity in the conclusion, but these points are not integrated into the body paragraphs to support your stance. To improve, ensure that your position is clearly supported throughout the essay by linking your reasons directly to the negative consequences you identify.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'In contrast' and 'For instance,' to link your points. However, some transitions are a bit mechanical, and the connection between the body paragraphs and your final conclusion could be smoother. The final paragraph introduces new information about land mass that was not previously discussed, which disrupts the logical flow. Using more varied linking words and ensuring that the conclusion only summarizes the points already made will help improve your score in this area.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'sentimental value,' 'livelihood,' and 'residential properties.' There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'utilise their earnings in a efficient and most fruitful manner' (which is slightly awkward) and 'limited number of land mass' (land mass is usually uncountable or referred to as 'amount of land'). While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, incorporating more precise collocations and less common academic vocabulary would elevate your writing to a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'People prefer owning a house than renting one can be due to various reason' (which lacks a proper subject-verb structure) and 'throughout their childhood or teenage' (should be 'teenage years'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and article errors throughout the text. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed accurately will help you improve.
