IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In some countries, having your own home instead of paying rent is very important for individuals; the main reason of this is that there may be a price increase in rent; however renting could be positive for people who doesn't have enough money to buy a house.
It's a well-known fact that economy affects everything and one of them is the price increases when you pay rent. For example me and my parents are living at the same house for 12 years, but thanks to the Turkish economy that keeps decreasing over years, we pay ten times more rent now than when we first moved here. So owning a home could be more profitable sometimes.
People often think that paying an amount once a month is more easy than paying at once, which could be true for people who doesn't have enough money. For instance my friends salary doesn't enough for her to buy a house but she can easily live a comfortable life when renting a home because she can pay once a month. So renting is positive for people who can't buy a house .
Consequently in some countries owning a home rather than renting is very important for people because people can't control the economy and there may be price increase over time however; rent is positive for people who doesn't gain enough money to buy a house.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: why home ownership is important and whether it is a positive or negative situation. However, the development of ideas is limited. The explanation regarding economic instability is relevant but lacks depth, and the discussion on renting is somewhat repetitive. Furthermore, the response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, coming in at 231 words. This under-length significantly impacts the ability to fully develop the arguments, resulting in a score that reflects the lack of sufficient detail and the failure to meet the task length constraint.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'so' and 'however'. The transition between ideas is sometimes abrupt, and the logical progression within paragraphs is hindered by the limited development of points. Referencing is generally clear, but the overall flow is somewhat disjointed due to the simple sentence structures and limited range of linking words used to connect complex ideas effectively.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but remains quite basic and repetitive. Phrases like 'price increase', 'enough money', and 'comfortable life' are used throughout. There is little attempt to use less common or more sophisticated vocabulary that would demonstrate a higher level of lexical control. While the meaning is generally clear, the lack of variety and precision in word choice limits the score. To improve, you should aim to incorporate more topic-specific collocations and synonyms to avoid repetition and add nuance to your arguments.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response relies heavily on simple sentence structures. There are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement, such as 'people who doesn't have' and 'my friends salary doesn't enough'. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with misuse of semicolons and commas. While the errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to be noticeable. To achieve a higher band, you need to demonstrate a wider range of complex sentence structures and improve your accuracy with basic grammatical rules, especially regarding pluralisation and verb forms.
