IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 7.0)
In a number of countries it is very essential for people to have their own homes instead of living in houses where they have to pay rent. The reasons for this are that in many countries owning a house show wealth and personal capabilities. It is also considered as a status symbol. According to me, this is a negative situation because it can add a lot of pressure to people. Moreover, it can also start a competition among relatives which can lead to bitterness and disputes.
In many nations, young people especially male are considered capable for marrying only if they have their own home. This can add unnessary pressure to people; consequently, delaying the marriage of many individuals. Furthermore, in many countries a person is not considered to be successful until they buy a house. This can seriously effect the mental health of young people. For example, according to a survey conducted in Pakistan and some other south asian countries many marriage proposals are rejected by families because the groom does not have a house.
In many countries relatives are always in a competition with each other. Owning a house has become one of a status symbol, the bigger the house a family has the more respectful it will be considered. As a result, a lot of rich families try to increase their influence on families who have no house; hence, bitterness increases between them. For example, in another survey conducted solely in Pakistan it was stated that majority of relatives are jealous of each other due to house related issues.
Everyone wants to have their own home due to various reasons such as future security or stability. However, it should never be made a status symbol or a source of competition. Therefore, pressure can be reduced among individuals and harmony will prevail.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have addressed all parts of the prompt by explaining why home ownership is important and providing a clear opinion on whether this is positive or negative. Your position is consistent throughout the essay. The ideas are relevant, particularly the social pressure regarding marriage and status. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat repetitive; for instance, the focus on 'status' and 'competition' appears in both the second and third paragraphs. To reach a higher band, try to expand on the economic or psychological benefits of home ownership in more depth rather than focusing solely on the social pressures, which would provide a more balanced and comprehensive response.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'moreover', 'consequently', 'furthermore', and 'as a result' to link your ideas. However, some of these transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive in their placement. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. To improve, ensure that the progression between sentences is smoother and that you vary your linking words to avoid a formulaic structure. The referencing is generally clear, though some sentences could be more tightly connected to the main argument of the paragraph.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'status symbol', 'bitterness', and 'harmony'. There are some instances of slightly unnatural collocation or word choice, such as 'very essential' (essential is already an extreme adjective) and 'effect' used instead of the verb 'affect'. You also repeat the phrase 'in many countries' several times, which limits the sophistication of your writing. To improve, try to use a wider variety of synonyms and more precise academic collocations to convey your ideas with greater nuance and less repetition.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'owning a house show wealth' (should be 'shows') and 'one of a status symbol' (should be 'a status symbol'). You also have minor spelling errors like 'unnessary' and 'asian' (should be capitalized). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and proofreading for small mechanical errors, and try to incorporate more complex sentence forms with greater accuracy.
