IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.5)

In today's world there are billions of people living in each part of earth. Individuals migrate from one place to another in search of jobs, better place to settle etc. Majority of people prefer to own the house than renting them where they lived. The reason is simple people want unlimited access to the place and freedom in their home which I liked while living there.

Most people think to own his/her own house due the accessibility of resources they have after buying and it's the investment that never deprecate along the time. For example, I have brought a house near a city which cost 1.5 million dollars. But I have all comfort in that house which cannot be provided in rental house as they have some protocols to consider. Additionally, the money in the rental houses is not cheat and cannot return the amount spend. However, after owning a house you have unlimited choice regarding furniture, color, etc. Moreover, your investment also comes with additional profit as houses price incline each year. So, the overall benefits are comparatively higher by owning house or home than renting one which is important for people and has positive situation for the individuals. Those reasons led to people in some countries to own a home than renting one which I consider a positive situation and better allocation of financial sum.

At last, I want to conclude that in some countries owning houses are prioritized than renting one because of the limitlessness in rental houses and price there are expensive with limited facilities.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for the importance of home ownership and the writer's opinion on whether this is positive or negative. However, the development of ideas is somewhat superficial. While the writer mentions financial investment and personal freedom, these points are not fully explored or supported with sophisticated reasoning. The personal anecdote about a 1.5 million dollar house is a bit distracting and does not contribute significantly to the overall argument. To reach a higher band, the writer should provide more nuanced analysis of the socio-economic factors involved in home ownership versus renting, rather than focusing primarily on personal preference and furniture choices.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into three paragraphs, which is a standard structure. There is a logical progression of ideas, moving from the reasons for ownership to the writer's opinion. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally inaccurate. For instance, the transition 'At last, I want to conclude' is slightly unnatural, and the use of 'However' in the second paragraph does not effectively contrast the preceding point. Referencing is sometimes unclear, such as the phrase 'the money in the rental houses is not cheat', which makes the flow of the argument difficult to follow in places.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the precision and range required for higher bands. There are several instances of awkward word choices and non-standard collocations, such as 'deprecate along the time' (instead of 'depreciate over time'), 'money... is not cheat' (likely meaning 'cheap' or 'a good deal'), and 'houses price incline' (instead of 'increase' or 'appreciate'). While the writer attempts to use some topic-specific vocabulary like 'investment' and 'allocation of financial sum', the overall control is inconsistent, and some phrasing is repetitive or confusing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Common issues include subject-verb agreement ('houses are prioritized'), incorrect article usage ('the houses price'), and awkward phrasing ('the reason is simple people want'). Punctuation is generally functional, but the sentence structure often feels disjointed. While the meaning is usually clear despite these errors, the lack of consistent control over complex structures prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. More attention to basic grammar rules and sentence construction is needed.
