IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.5)

In the modern age, people all overnthe world are fighting with home crisis. Having a roof, either owned or rented is one of the most basic essentials of life, but some countries and states have made it compulsory for its people to own a home instead of renting one. I strongly condemn the situation due to few reasons.

World today is already facing with variety of issues such as inflation, pandemics and wars. Due to these factors people are already struggling to find jobs and meet their daily requirements. In such situation, most of the middle class families prefer renting a home instead of buying one.

There are some basic and logical reasons why individuals prefer renting a house. Firstly, the prices of houses have sky-rocketed in the past few years. Buying a property has become a dream for many. The most amount of their salaries vanishes in meeting their daily expenses, utilities and groceries. Their savings are gone during the Covid pandemic and some are even struggling with their jobs and businesses due to inflation and wars going on around the globe. Consequently, a lot of people are living in rented spaces because they have left with no other option and they don't have the monetary power of owning a house even if they prefer having it.

In these circumstances, I'd say it is crucial for the governments to make specific laws where people are welcomed both ways. There should be enough ease for people either they want to rent a space or own it. It will decrease burden on the individuals so that they may focus on other aspects of their lives. Moreover, it may also lower the home crisis overall.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: why home ownership is important and whether this is positive or negative. However, the development is somewhat uneven. While you explain why renting is preferred due to economic factors, you do not fully explore the reasons why some countries place such high importance on ownership (e.g., cultural stability, investment, or social status). Your position is clear, but the argument regarding whether the situation is positive or negative is slightly underdeveloped. To reach a higher band, ensure you provide more balanced analysis for both sides of the prompt, specifically addressing why ownership is often viewed as a societal priority.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, each with a clear central topic. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Consequently', and 'Moreover' to link ideas. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs could be smoother. Referencing is generally clear, but some sentences feel slightly disconnected. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that the progression of ideas within paragraphs is more fluid rather than relying on simple list-like transitions.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'sky-rocketed', 'monetary power', and 'essentials of life'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'fighting with home crisis' (should be 'facing a housing crisis') and 'they have left with no other option' (should be 'they are left with no other option'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher bands. Try to incorporate more topic-specific collocations related to economics and housing policy.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'World today is already facing with' (missing article and incorrect preposition) and 'either they want to rent' (should be 'whether they want to rent'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are occasional slips. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles, as these are recurring issues throughout your writing.
