IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Home or shelter is one of the significant basic needs, In some nations, people often prefer to have a home instead of renting one and it is considered as an important issue. This essay will discuss the reasons behind this and why it is a positive approach.

Many people choose to own a home because it helps to save some money. For instance, in many developing countries, people often struggle to pay their rents, which creates pressure on them. It they have a place to live, it reduces a burden over them. In addition, they can save some money for the future and may be it is one of the major reasons behind this situation. Moreover, people have right to have their own home to reside. On the other hand, renting helps people who need to move either for career or education. For example, many students leave their house and transform elsewhere to pursue higher study. Similarly, employees often have to transfer from one region to another and settle their.

In my opinion, it is a positive situation because it gives people independence and freedom to live. People can live as they want to live. However, renting is also essential for many reasons. It helps people to live in a new place for a moment.

Therefore, though having a home is important because it reflects human rights, renting is equally important for the people whenever it is needed. I think both options should be opened and the choice depends on the individuals purposes, perspectives and situations.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the reasons for home ownership and the opinion on whether it is positive or negative. However, the development of ideas is somewhat superficial. For instance, the argument that owning a home 'helps to save some money' is not fully explained, as home ownership often involves significant upfront costs and maintenance expenses. The discussion on renting is relevant but lacks depth, and the conclusion is a bit contradictory, as it shifts from supporting ownership to suggesting both are equally important. To reach a higher band, you should provide more detailed examples and ensure your position remains consistent throughout the essay.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. There is a logical progression from the reasons for ownership to the counter-argument about renting. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive (e.g., 'In addition', 'Moreover', 'On the other hand'). Some transitions feel abrupt, such as the jump between the benefits of owning and the benefits of renting. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence would enhance the flow of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. You rely on common, basic terms like 'important', 'good', and 'place'. There are also some minor collocation errors, such as 'transform elsewhere' (instead of 'relocate') and 'settle their' (instead of 'settle there'). To improve, try to incorporate more topic-specific vocabulary related to housing, finance, and social mobility, and pay closer attention to word forms and spelling to avoid minor inaccuracies.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'It they have a place' (likely a typo for 'If'), 'may be it is' (should be 'maybe'), and 'people have right' (missing article 'the'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma usage. To achieve a higher score, you need to demonstrate more control over complex structures and reduce the frequency of basic grammatical errors, ensuring that your sentences are consistently error-free.
