IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 5.5)
It is believed that getting ownership of a house is more important than living in rent house in many nations. There are many reasons for this. I think it is a positive aspect. Both the views are discussed further.
Discussing the reasons, the foremost reason is becoming a owner of a home is long term success in many householders. Because many people have dream of getting their own home and they working very hard for this. As a result, after buying home their confidence increase and they like to achieve more goals in the future. In addition, many individuals invest money in buying accommodation. This is because price of property investments are increasing in the future. Therefore, it provides a financial security. For example, a recent survey in India showed that, more than thirty percentage people are interested to buy home in cities.
Talking about view, it creates long term benefits to communities. If homeowners lives in particular place for many years, it strengthen relationship between residents. Hence, more community activities and trust are built. Moreover, owners do not worry about renting house price. Since people live in rented house, they have constant fear of increase in price in resident house. Therefore, individuals live in their own house without any disturbance of other people.
In conclusion, owning house gives lots of benefits like financial freedom and stability. I believe that it gives positive values such as built relationship with neighbours and do not think about increasing price of renting house.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: explaining why home ownership is important and expressing a clear opinion on whether this is positive or negative. The ideas are relevant, such as financial security and community stability. However, the development is somewhat limited; for instance, the point about 'long term success' is vague and could be better supported with more specific examples. While the position is clear throughout, the explanation of why it is a positive situation could be more nuanced to reach a higher band. The response covers all requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. There is a progression of ideas from the reasons for ownership to the benefits for the community. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'In addition', 'Therefore', and 'Moreover', though some transitions feel a bit mechanical. Referencing is generally clear, although the connection between sentences could be smoother in the second paragraph. Overall, the structure is coherent and easy to follow, meeting the requirements for a logical flow of information.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to convey their ideas clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'financial security', 'accommodation', and 'property investments'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'living in rent house' instead of 'renting a house' and 'more than thirty percentage people' instead of 'thirty percent of people'. The range is sufficient to communicate, but lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the price of property'), subject-verb agreement ('homeowners lives'), and verb forms ('they working very hard'). Punctuation is generally functional, but some sentences are slightly awkward due to these grammatical slips. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. More attention to basic grammar rules and sentence construction would improve the quality.
