IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Home is one of the most significant asset with other one's which gives shelter to live. I agree with the peope who believe that owning a home rahter than renting one is very important and I will discuss my point and opinion thorugh this essay.

To begin with, it can be seen that people with a home at their name is living the happy life. For example, they can decorate their home according to their interest in different festivals like they can dedorate christmas tree in christmas, they can light up candles in diwali and also fire crackers, and so on. There are so many benefits living in the own home like a person cannot have to worry about the rent. Moreover, childrens can make their own room according to their needs and with the different colour of lights or LEDs.

On the other side, in a rented home, a person cannot live freely and comfortably as they can live in their own home. They have to pay deposit, rent, electricity bills, water bills which makes their life more exhaustic. In addition, they cannot enhance their rooms according to their interest otherwise they have to pay more money. A person cannot celebrate any festival if they live in a rental home.

In my opinion, it is better to live in an own house becasue a person can live with their freedom and happiness, so that they can be more passionate and dedicated for the position they want to become in their life.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for the importance of home ownership and an opinion on whether this is positive or negative. However, the development is limited. The arguments regarding festivals and room decoration are somewhat superficial and repetitive. The essay lacks a broader perspective on the economic or social implications of home ownership, which would have strengthened the response. While the position is clear, the ideas are not fully extended, leading to a somewhat simplistic argument that does not fully explore the complexity of the topic.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or repetitive (e.g., 'To begin with', 'Moreover', 'On the other side'). There are instances where the logical flow between sentences is weak, particularly in the second paragraph where the transition from festival decoration to financial concerns feels abrupt. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and the progression of ideas within paragraphs lacks the sophistication required for a higher band score.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision needed for a higher score. There are frequent spelling errors (e.g., 'peope', 'rahter', 'thorugh', 'becasue') and some awkward word choices, such as 'exhaustic' and 'at their name'. The range of vocabulary is limited to basic, everyday terms, and there is little attempt to use less common or idiomatic expressions. While the meaning is generally clear, the lack of lexical variety and the recurring spelling mistakes hinder the overall quality of the writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay relies heavily on simple sentence structures. While there are attempts at complex sentences, they often contain grammatical errors, such as 'a person cannot have to worry' and 'childrens can make their own room'. Punctuation is generally functional, but there are issues with subject-verb agreement and article usage. The frequency of errors is noticeable and occasionally distracts the reader, although they do not completely impede communication. To improve, you should focus on mastering complex sentence structures and ensuring consistent grammatical accuracy.
