IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In various countries having a own home rather than renting is crucial for citizens. In my opinion it is a positive change. This essay will expalin why.

In today's world numerous individuals are travel to other countries for working purposes where they get settled after some days. The home is essential become essential thing for them so they take a home on rent basis but for the long term basis it is not a solution for them however they found that the amount of money they are paying for rented house is quite high, and most of the time it comes with furniture and machinaries. If they break any of this item they have to pay a fine of this things. so to avoid this consequences and to save money people bought the home rather than rentin.

In many ways it is a benefitial for the people, they can save the money as well as they can use it as a investment option. For instance, my freind Abhishek and his family were come to pune for his dad's work. So they they bought a flat in my society and they lived for 2 years in that flat because his dad got transfer to other place that is why they sold the flat few days ago and they made 1.5 times more profit than its base value. Moreover apart from money people get freedom in their house such as they can have a right to do whatever changes they want in the home like painting, decorating.

In conclusion, most of the people buying home rather than renting because it gives a freedom and save the moneyof them. It is a also good option for investment and they have a chance to make profit by it.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The essay addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for the importance of home ownership and the writer's opinion on whether this is positive. However, the development is somewhat uneven. The reasons provided—financial savings and freedom—are relevant, but the explanation regarding 'machinaries' and rental fines is slightly narrow. The example of the friend in Pune is personal and illustrative, which helps support the argument, but the essay would benefit from a more balanced discussion of the potential downsides of home ownership to provide a more comprehensive view. The position is clear from the introduction, but the conclusion is a bit repetitive.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical. For instance, the transition 'that is why they sold the flat' is a bit clunky. While cohesive devices like 'Moreover' and 'In conclusion' are used, they are somewhat basic. Referencing is sometimes unclear, such as in the phrase 'pay a fine of this things', where the pronoun reference is imprecise. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear, but the use of cohesive devices could be more sophisticated to improve the logical flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. There are several instances of awkward word choices or non-standard collocations, such as 'machinaries' (machinery), 'rentin' (renting), and 'a own home' (their own home). The student attempts to use some topic-specific vocabulary like 'investment option' and 'base value', which is positive. However, the repetition of basic words like 'money' and 'home' limits the lexical variety. To improve, the student should focus on learning more precise collocations and avoiding informal phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally hinder readability. Common issues include subject-verb agreement ('individuals are travel', 'they was come'), article usage ('the home is essential become essential thing'), and pluralization ('this things'). While the meaning is generally clear, these persistent errors in basic grammar prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. The student should focus on proofreading for basic tense consistency and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed with correct verb forms and prepositions.
