IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In some countries it is widely believed that owning a home, rather than renting one, is something significant for people's lives.

My opinion is that this conviction is positive and, moreover, part of the human need to look for stability in different fields.

It is undeniable that renting an apartment has some benefits, for example having more flexibility to move to another city or having to pay fewer fees. Moreover the majority of people do not have the financial stability to buy their own home and, often, are forced to ask for a bank loan.

In addition to that, the rent fees are not unnecessary expenses because, in reality people are paying to use a service (a home in this situation).

However, one substancial difference between renting a home and owning one, is the fact that, when a person decides to change place or just to change his house, he does not own anything despite the financial engagement he has undergone. It is also relevant to consider the social aspect of this matter: for many years and for different reasons, to own a house was a sign of financial stability as well as an investment. If in addition to that we consider that in this last period there are more and more things we use and we do not own, this desier to be owners of their house is an absolutely justified feeling.

So, I am confident to affirm that the people's need to own the place where they live is a positive situation. People have to be secure that their most basic and fundamental object (their home), is really their and, despite their financial or familiar problems, they have a roof over their head.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed both parts of the prompt: explaining why home ownership is important and providing your opinion on whether this is a positive or negative situation. Your position is clear from the introduction and maintained throughout. However, the development of ideas could be more robust. For instance, while you mention financial stability and the 'social aspect', these points could be expanded with more specific examples or deeper analysis to reach a higher band. You have successfully covered all requirements of the task, but the depth of argumentation is somewhat limited, which prevents a higher score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'In addition to that', 'However', and 'Moreover' to link your ideas. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the benefits of renting from the arguments for ownership. To improve, ensure that the relationship between sentences is always clear; for example, the transition between the discussion of renting and the shift to ownership could be more fluid to enhance the overall progression of your argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'conviction', 'financial engagement', and 'substancial' (noting the spelling error). You attempt to use less common vocabulary, which is good, but there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and spelling, such as 'desier' instead of 'desire' and 'substancial' instead of 'substantial'. Additionally, some phrasing is slightly unnatural, such as 'the rent fees are not unnecessary expenses'. Improving your precision and checking spelling will help you move into a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. Examples include 'to own a house was a sign' (should be 'owning a house is a sign'), 'is really their' (should be 'is really theirs'), and 'the people's need' (should be 'people's need'). These errors do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of possessive pronouns will significantly improve your accuracy.
