IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In contemporary society, owning a house rather than renting one is very essential for many people. The reason is that some individuals value their privacy and I believe this is a positive development because it reduces financial constraints.

First and foremost, owning a home is very important. This is because many individuals who have houses enjoy the comfortability that comes with it, where they are free to live their lives without being interrupted or pressured by anyone. Many people value their privacy very much that they don't appreciate it when neighbours intrudes. For instance, many Nigerians who rent apartment may complain of noise or invasion of privacy from neighbours. As a result, they may find it hard to cope in the neighbourhood. Another significant reason is that most house-owners have something to leave behind after they pass-on. This means that some homes are passed down to generations, thus, making it a generational inheritance. Consequently, through this a legacy is built.

In addition, I believe this is a positive situation, especially when some individuals pays out-rightly. This means that they do not need to worry about paying subsequently for annual rents, hence, they could invest their funds on other relevant things. Having a house in most countries is a huge purchase, which should be acknowledged. For example, people in the United Kingdom may find it easy to purchase a house because it is cheaper than renting apartments.

In conclusion, although renting a house has its own benefits, I believe that owning a home is a positive development because of privacy and reduced financial constraints.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for the importance of home ownership and an opinion on whether this is positive or negative. The ideas are relevant, such as privacy and generational inheritance. However, the development is somewhat limited. For instance, the claim that buying a house in the UK is cheaper than renting is a sweeping generalization that lacks nuance or factual support, which weakens the argument. To reach a higher band, you should provide more detailed explanations and more realistic examples to support your claims. The position is clear throughout, but the depth of analysis could be improved to fully satisfy the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear central topic. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'First and foremost', 'In addition', and 'Consequently', which help the flow of ideas. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical or repetitive. The referencing is generally clear, though the connection between the idea of 'privacy' and the example of 'Nigerians' could be more smoothly integrated. The overall progression of ideas is logical, but the paragraphing could be more sophisticated to ensure that the transition between the reasons for ownership and the evaluation of the situation is more seamless.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'contemporary society', 'financial constraints', and 'generational inheritance'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'comfortability' is non-standard (the correct term is 'comfort'), and 'pays out-rightly' is slightly awkward; 'pays in full' or 'makes an outright purchase' would be more natural. There are also minor errors such as 'neighbours intrudes' (subject-verb agreement). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include 'many Nigerians who rent apartment may complain' (missing article 'an' or plural 'apartments'), 'neighbours intrudes' (subject-verb agreement), and 'individuals pays' (subject-verb agreement). Punctuation is generally functional, but these recurring errors in basic grammar prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles, as these are the most frequent issues in your writing.
